3 takeaways as Wembanyama’s double-double helps Spurs win again

WASHINGTON - Victor Wembanyama’s vicious revenge dunk delighted fans on French Heritage Night at Capital One Arena.

Seconds after Tristan Vukcevic blocked one of his shots down low in the second quarter, Wembanyama answered with an explosive, spinning slam over the 7-foot Serbian that woke up the crowd and had brought everybody on the visitor’s bench to their feet.

Wembanyama’s dunk highlighted a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double in 22 minutes off the bench that helped the Spurs down shorthanded Washington 124-113 for their season-high sixth win in a row.

The Spurs lost to New York in the NBA Cup championship in the midst of their streak, but that game doesn’t count in the standings.

Wembanyama wasn’t available after the game because of what the Spurs called “personal reasons.”

De’Aaron Fox finished with 27 points, seven rebounds and six assists, Luke Kornet scored 12 of his season-high 20 points in the fourth quarter to go along with a season-best 12 rebounds, and Stephon Castle contributed 18 points and 11 assists as the Spurs (21-7) swept their two-game series with the Wizards (5-22).

Bub Carrington led the Wizards with 21 points. Tre Johnson and Vukcevic added 19 and 18, respectively.

The Wizards’ long list of sidelined players included Alex Sarr (adductor), Khris Middleton (knee), Bilal Coulibaly (ankle) and Marvin Bagley III (calf).

In all, Washington had just nine NBA players and one two-way contract players available.

Before the game, the Spurs announced the signing of San Antonio Warren High alumnus Stanley Umude to a two-way contract. To make room for Umude, the Spurs waived two-way play Kyle Mangas.

Here are three takeaways from the Spurs’ seventh road game in their last eight outings:

Spurs stand firm with their patient approach to Wembanyama

For the fifth game in a row, including the NBA Cup championship loss to New York, Wembanyama came off the bench under a minutes restriction after missing 12 games with a calf injury.

Before the game, coach Mitch Johnson stressed the club is in no rush to return to how they would normally use their franchise player.

“That’s going to be the plan until it’s not," Johnson said. "The season’s long and grueling, so it’s not like Day 5 of this or day whatever of that. It’s a treacherous schedule, and so we have to continue to take it day by day on how he’s feeling, how he’s reacting and because of what he’s had recently.

“We are overly mindful of that and other guys in that same situation, but specifically because of his unique and adamant situation.”

Again, for those eager to see the All-Star center return to the starting lineup and log 30-plus minutes, the Spurs are always going to put the health of their players first.

Spurs aren’t only team that puts player-safety first

Despite the franchise marketing Sunday’s game as French Heritage Night, the Wizards held out Sarr to manage his recovery from an adductor injury.

Sarr, 20, was joined on the inactive list with the team’s other young Frenchman, Coulibaly, 21, who is nursing an injured ankle.

Sarr, Coulibaly and Wembanyama are among the nearly 20 French players currently in the NBA.

“The French prospects are popular right now,” Wembanyama said. “I like that. It’s very promising.”

Sarr is averaging 19.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.9 rebounds. He produced 18 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and a block in helping the Wizards overcome a 20-point deficit to defeat the Grizzlies 130-122 in Memphis on Saturday night.

Coulibaly is averaging 8.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.2 assists.

Sarr posted 18 points, four rebounds, three assists and a block in 24 minutes against the Spurs last week.

“Alex has had a terrific start to his second year,” Wizards coach Brian Keefe said. “He’s doing some really unique things in averages with points, blocks, assists and threes that most guys you don’t see at this age. But he’s just scratching the surface. He’s just at the early part. We don’t put a ceiling on anything with anybody, especially him. He’s going to continue to grow, but we’ve really loved his progress from year one to year two, and we’re going to see great things as he continues through this year.”

Kornet quietly delivers

Overshadowed by Wembanyama, Fox and Castle, the 7-1 bruiser Kornet posted his third double-double of the season.

Kornet’s best sequence came midway through the fourth quarter when he scored seven consecutive points on a slam, a pair of free throws and another dunk to give the Spurs a 19-point lead that pushed back against the Wizards’ comeback bid after trailing by 24 points.

Kornet’s free throws in that run came after he raced down the court for a shot in the paint after he stripped the ball from Vukcevic.
