pic.twitter.com/1XulmTM3QM

BOSTON — Victor Wembanyama wasn’t about to let the Spurs lose this one.

Wembanyama scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half, De’Aaron Fox also had 21, and the Spurs earned a hard-fought 100-95 win over Boston on Saturday night to snap a six-game losing streak against the Celtics.

Derrick White sank a pair of free throws to pull the Celtics within 97-95 with 37 seconds left, but Wembanyama sealed the win when he connected on a 15-foot pull-up jumper with 19.1 seconds left.

Wembanyama also hit a 15-foot fadeaway to give the Spurs the lead for good at 95-93 with 1:33 left.

“My mindset was just we have to close out that game,” the 22-year-old Frenchman said. “I think too often, I mean it’s easier said than done, but too often we do lots of efforts and let it go to waste one way or the other. So, I felt like not letting that happen.”

Wembanyama also had three blocks in 26 minutes off the bench.

“He is a young player who has an extreme amount of talent, as we obviously know, and a lot of weapons in the tool box,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said.

Keldon Johnson had 18 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for the Spurs, who improved to 27-11. Champagnie finished with 12 points and a career-best 13 rebounds and blocked a 3-point attempt by White with 7.3 seconds remaining.

White, the former Spur, had 29 points for the Celtics, who fell to 24-14. Jaylen Brown contributed 27 for Boston, which had won five of its last six games, including a win over Toronto on Friday night.

Here are three takeaways from the first game of a three-game road trip for the Spurs that continues Sunday night at Minnesota:

1. Spurs doing just fine with Wemby coming off the bench

The Spurs improved to 8-1 with the 7-foot-4 Frenchman in a reserve role.

Mitch Johnson indicated, though, in his pregame media session that Wembanyama might be back in the starting lineup soon.

That would be good for a team that needs to settle into a rotation as it fights for playoff seeding, but in the meantime, the Spurs have been smart to protect Wembanyama’s health after he suffered calf and knee injuries that forced him to miss a combined 14 games.

In the meantime, it’s important to remember they are winning with their franchise player in a reserve role.

2. Celtics show no respect for Castle’s stroke

With Spurs shooting just 23% from beyond the arc (10 of 44), the Celtics had an easy time doubling Wembanyama, especially in the first half when he managed just five points.

On a number of occasions, Boston had the player defending Stephon Castle peel off to provide help.

The strategy worked because Castle struggled from from outside, hitting just 1 of 7 from 3-point range on a night he finished just 3 of 16 from the field.

That’s an area of the game the second-year pro needs to work on. He entered Saturday’s game shooting just 26.9% from distance.

3. Kornet remains fan favorite in Boston

As a member of Boston’s 2024 NBA championship team, Luke Kornet will always be looked upon fondly in Beantown. But Celtics fans also appreciate him for his unique sense of humor, which the big man displayed after shootaround Saturday morning.

Asked if he was expecting a tribute video in making his first appearance at TD Garden since signing with the Spurs in July, Kornet joked, “For potential Hall of Famers like myself, you kind of expect it at a certain point.”

Sure enough, the Celtics honored him with a lengthy, fun video at the end of the first period that featured a lot of his jokes and antics that ended with the crowd giving him a standing ovation that he acknowledged with a few waves.
