BOSTON — Julian Champagnie pulled Victor Wembanyama aside after watching him hit a pair of clutch shots to bury the Boston Celtics.
“You are cold,” Champagnie told the 22-year-old Frenchman.
Wembanyama scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half, including a game-sealing jumper with 19.1 seconds left, De’Aaron Fox had 21 points to go along with a season-high nine rebounds and six assists, and the Spurs earned a hard-fought 100-95 victory Saturday night for their second straight win after losing two in a row.
It also snapped a six-game losing streak against the Celtics.
Derrick White sank a pair of free throws to pull Boston within 97-95 with 37 seconds left, but Wembanyama responded 18 ticks later by cooly connecting on a 15-foot pull-up jumper from the left wing over 7-foot Neemias Queta.
Wembanyama also hit a 15-foot contested fadeaway to give the Spurs the lead for good at 95-93 with 1:33 left.
“My mindset was just we have to close out that game,” Wembanyama said. “I think too often, I mean it’s easier said than done, but too often we do lots of efforts and let it go to waste one way or the other. So, I felt like not letting that happen.”
“The kid’s good. … He just gets buckets,” Champagnie said. “He knows what he’s doing. He finds his spots well.”
Wembanyama also had three blocks in 26 minutes off the bench as the Spurs improved to 27-11 in the first game of a back-to-back.
“He is a young player who has an extreme amount of talent, as we obviously know, and a lot of weapons in the tool box,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said.
Keldon Johnson had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Spurs to notch his fourth double-double of the season. Champagnie finished with 12 points and a career-best 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the year after posting just one in the first 173 games of his career.
Champagnie also scored on a putback after a turnover to make it 97-93 with 41 seconds left and blocked a 3-point attempt by White with 7.3 seconds remaining.
“We trust him,” Wembanyama said of Champagnie, who has started the last six games in a row with Devin Vassell out with a groin injury. “The front office, the coaching staff, everybody believes in him and he’s just capitalizing on that. It’s like we can’t do without him now. He’s part of this. He’s indispensable.”
White had 29 points against his former team. Jaylen Brown contributed 27 for Boston, which fell to 24-14 after winning five of its last six games, including a win over Toronto on Friday night.
The Spurs, who played at Minnesota on Sunday night, improved to 8-1 in games Wembanyama has come off the bench. He said he’s getting closer to returning to the starting lineup after spending the last three games as a reserve following a knee injury that sidelined him for two in a row.
“The goal is to start soon and to keep it that way for the rest of the season,” Wembanyama said.
No matter his role, Wembanyama will remain a cold-blooded player, Champagnie said.
“He’s just doing his thing, man,” Champagnie said.
Celtics welcome back Kornet
Spurs center Luke Kornet displayed the trademark sense of humor that helped make him a fan favorite when asked before the game if he expected the Celtics to welcome him back to Boston with a tribute video.
“For potential Hall of Famers like myself, you kind of expect it at a certain point,” he said.
Sure enough, the Celtics honored him with a lengthy, fun video at the end of the first period that featured a lot of his jokes and antics. When it ended, the sellout crowd of 19,156 at TD Garden gave him a standing ovation that he acknowledged with a few waves.
“I obviously appreciated my time here,” said Kornet, who signed a four-year, $41 million contract with the Spurs in July after five seasons with the Celtics.

“I have nothing but positive things to say about the organization and all the people in it. I’m really grateful. It is a little bit of a strange day being in Boston and staying in a hotel. I’m realizing how much time I spent driving to the games and on the other side of the hallway in the locker room.”
Kornet finished with five points and seven rebounds. His putback dunk pulled the Spurs within 91-90 with 2:43 left.
“It’s definitely a cool day to have and obviously being able to come and win the game,” Kornet said. "I’ve been really thankful for the time here and grateful to God for the life it was for me and my family.”
Bryant gains confidence in short Austin stint
Rookie Carter Bryant rejoined the Spurs on Saturday after making a confidence-boosting debut in the G League the night before.
The 20-year-old forward from Arizona had 15 points, five rebounds and two blocks in 28 minutes in the Austin Spurs’ win over the South Bay Lakers on Friday.
“That was the most minutes I have played since my senior year at high school, so it was a great opportunity for me to get some live reps, to see the ball go through basket a little bit,” said Bryant, who the Spurs drafted 14th overall in June. “That’s the biggest thing in the game of basketball. If your confidence is lacking, it’s going to be hard for you to play no matter how good you are.”
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said he assigned Bryant to Austin to “provide him an opportunity to play 25-plus minutes and sweat, compete, and go try to help his team win and fight for a little bit more than some of the more limited opportunities he’s gotten with us.”
Although he didn’t rule out more G League assignments for Bryant, Johnson indicated it won’t be a regular thing.
“I thought he did a great job and it’s not really a long term are we going to send him back there or not” the coach said. “I just thought it was the right time.”
One highlight of Bryant’s short stint in Austin: He completed a dunk after missing several with the Spurs.
“I’m sure I will have more in my career, but it was nice to see one go through tonight,” he said with a laugh.
