SAN FRANCISCO — A little more than an hour before tipoff Wednesday at the Chase Center, Golden State coach Steve Kerr was asked how his undermanned and undersized team planned to handle the 7-foot-4 colossus known as Victor Wembanyama.

“Oh, we got it,” Kerr deadpanned. “We’re not going to reveal it. We figured it out a little while ago.”

It turns out the Warriors might need to go back to the drawing board.

Wembanyama scored 41 points, grabbed 18 rebounds, made 16 of 22 shots and blocked three shots as the Spurs reeled off a 127-113 victory at the Warriors’ expense.

It was not a fair fight.

Golden State was missing nine rotation players, most notably All-Star guard Stephen Curry. The Warriors had nine healthy players available, three of whom were on two-way contracts. Two of those players — L.J. Cryer and Nate Williams — were in the starting lineup.

Golden State’s tallest starter Wednesday was 6-foot-6 Draymond Green, allowing Wembanyama and the Spurs to make short work of the miniscule Warriors.

The win was the Spurs’ 10th in a row, solidifying their second double-digit winning streak of the season.

Wembanyama did all his damage in 29 minutes as the game got out of hand and stayed there.

Stephon Castle and Julian Champagnie chipped in 15 points apiece for the Spurs, who had seven players in double figures.

Williams, one of the aforementioned two-way players, led the Warriors with 18 points.

Here are three takeaways from Wednesday’s victory, which improved the Spurs to 58-18:

1. Spurs know where their croissant is buttered

As they did two nights earlier against similarly undersized Chicago, the Spurs used Wembanyama’s gargantuan height advantage to, well, their advantage.

Wembanyama scored the game’s first basket 16 seconds into the first quarter with an and-one bucket on Brandin Podziemski.

He had 17 of the Spurs’ 35 points in the opening period. All six of his first-quarter field goals came in the paint. Three of them came on easy-does-it lobs at the rim.

By halftime, Wembanyama was up to 27 points and 13 rebounds, and the Spurs led 70-49.

The beat went on after intermission.

Wembanyama matched a season scoring high — set two nights earlier against Chicago. He ran his string of games with at least 15 rebounds to five straight games, the second longest streak in club history.

Had the Warriors been able to keep things more competitive, rendering Wembanyama’s services necessary down the stretch, he might have ended with the first 40-20 game of his career.

As it stood, he missed it by only two rebounds.

2. What are the Spurs getting out of these games?

The Spurs are undeniably rolling, having posted their second double-digit winning streak of the season.

Their past six victories have each come by double digits. Wednesday’s triumph marked their narrowest margin of victory on the road since a 119-115 win at the L.A Clippers on March 16.

The win over the Warriors did break a string of four straight road victories by at least 25 points.

The Spurs have faced a litany of teams during this stretch as banged up as the Warriors were or worse.

It is worth wondering how much these kinds of easy-does-it victories are preparing the Spurs for the playoffs.

The degree of difficulty ramps up a bit on this road trip, as the Spurs face the Clippers again Thursday before heading to Denver on Saturday.

Those games should give the Spurs a better indication of their playoff readiness.

3. Kerr pleads Wemby’s MVP case (sort of)

Wembanyama made viral headlines last week when — at the behest of a reporter in Miami — he offered a three-pronged argument for himself for MVP.

The first item Wembanyama mentioned: Defense is half the game, and he dominates that end.

It was an assertion with which Kerr concurred.

“I do think two-way players are generally what wins you games and championships,” Kerr said. “He’s obviously the best defensive player in the entire league.”

Wembanayama came into Wednesday’s game averaging 24.5 points. The last player to win MVP while averaging less than 25 per game was, coincidentally enough, Curry in 2014-15.

The players considered Wembanyama’s greatest competition for this year’s award — Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the Los Angeles Lakers’ Luka Doncic and Denver’s Nikola Jokic — are all averaging more than that.

Kerr said that should not dissuade voters from putting Wembanyama atop their MVP ballots later this month.

“In my mind, the MVP is about impacting winning — who is impacting winning and who is lifting their team to new heights?” Kerr said. “Obviously, Wemby is as good a choice as anybody.”
