Spurs determined to protect Wembanyama during ‘long, grueling’ season

Even while some fans decry the strategy on social media, the Spurs are sticking to their plan to protect Victor Wembanyama’s health in the wake of the strained left calf that sidelined him for 12 games.

For the fifth game in a row, including the NBA Cup championship loss to New York, Wembanyama came off the bench Sunday night in a 124-113 win over Washington while he was still under a minutes restriction.

Despite logging just 22 minutes, Wembanyama notched his 11th double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. He also had two assists and two blocks to join Michael Jordan as the only two players in NBA history with 3,000-pus points, 500-plus assists and 100-plus blocks in their first 135 games.

Before the game, coach Mitch Johnson stressed the club is in no rush to return to how they would normally use their franchise player.

“That’s going to be the plan until it’s not," Johnson said of Wembanyama playing under a minutes restriction off the bench. "The season’s long and grueling, so it’s not like Day 5 of this or day whatever of that. It’s a treacherous schedule, and so we have to continue to take it day by day on how he’s feeling, how he’s reacting and because of what he’s had recently.

“We are overly mindful of that and other guys in that same situation, but specifically because of his unique and adamant situation.”

Johnson also praised Wembanyama for the maturity he’s shown in the face of playing through injury adversity.

“He’s grown as a player and as a young man, and so the maturity shows in terms of being comfortable in his own skin at peace with not trying to squeeze 36 minutes into 20,” Johnson said. “And that’s hard. He’s competitive. He wants to leave his imprints on the game and he wants to impose his will, but you just need to play the game the right way and let the game call upon what’s it asking at that time.”
