Spurs prepared for ‘dog fight’ with Oklahoma City

De’Aaron Fox walked toward the team bus at Capital One Arena after the Spurs’ 124-113 win Sunday night in Washington wearing fashionable winter clothing that had him well-prepared for the cold weather.

He also was braced for what awaits the Spurs in their next two games.

“It’s going to be a dog fight,” Fox said, referring to the team’s home-and-away series with Oklahoma City that begins Tuesday night at the Frost Bank Center and ends on Christmas Day.

Riding high after winning a season-best six in a row, a stretch that included a pair of games against the lowly Wizards, the Spurs (21-7) know things are about to get a lot tougher for them.

The defending NBA champion Thunder entered Monday night’s home game against Memphis with a 25-3 record. In addition to possessing the league’s top record, Oklahoma City also has this going for it: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Co. will enter the Frost Bank Center fueled by revenge after dropping a 111-109 decision to the Spurs in the NBA Cup semifinals on Dec. 13 in Las Vegas.

“Yeah, we’re expecting a dog fight,” the Spurs’ Stephon Castle said. “We beat them last time. Obviously they’re the defending champs, having a great season. So we expect nothing less from them to respond.”

Said Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, “They are the reigning champs and are who they are, so I’m expecting a very competitive, high-level game.”

The Spurs have a few things working in their favor, including the momentum gained from forging the NBA’s longest-current winning streak and the franchise’s longest since it won nine in a row during the 2018-19 season, which also marked the club’s last trip to the playoffs.

And they’ll be confident being back at home, where they are 10-2 this season, and with the knowledge that it hasn’t been long since they beat Oklahoma City.

In Vegas, Victor Wembanyama returned from a 12-game absence due to a calf injury with 22 points, nine rebounds and a plus-21 rating in 21 minutes off the bench. Devin Vassell scored 23 points and Fox and Castle each scored 22.

Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 29 points, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams each had 17. The Spurs enjoyed another night of balanced scoring in Washington, where Fox scored 27 points and sank five 3-pointers.

Luke Kornet scored 12 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter and finished with a season-high 12 rebounds, and Castle added 18 points and 11 assists as the Spurs won their second in four days against Washington.

Continuing to play limited minutes in his bench role, Wembanyama had 14 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks in 22 minutes. He wasn’t available for comment afterward due to what the Spurs called personal reasons.

The Spurs outscored the Wizards 43-21 in the second quarter en route to a 20-point halftime lead they pushed to 24 in the third period. Washington (5-22) pulled within nine three times in the final minutes four minutes, but the Spurs answered each threat in order with a 13-foot pull-jumper by Fox, a 4-foot driving hook by Keldon Johnson and a driving layup by Kornet set up by a pass from Fox, one of his six assists on the night.

“It was one of those games we needed guys to step up and get it done,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “It wasn’t pretty, wasn’t up to our standard in some aspects, but it’s a long season and you can’t always be too, I guess, selfish in terms of how it looks. Our guys did a good job of just doing enough to maintain.”

The Spurs know it’s going to take more to defeat the Thunder again.

“It’s going to be a tough game,” said Keldon Johnson, who came off the bench for 12 points in Washington to go along with nine rebounds, including a season-high six on the offensive end.

"We got to come in ready to play, ready to execute our game plan and be ready to adjust on the fly. It’s going to take everybody. We’re going to need everybody to lock in and really, really put it together. They’re a tough team, disciplined team, and that’s the name of the game.

“They’re one of the best teams in the league for a reason, and we love that challenge.”
