Spurs’ Jeremy Sochan continues to get bit by the injury bug

The injury bug continues to pester Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan.

Already sidelined for the entirety of the preseason due to a calf injury he suffered in August while training with the Polish national team for FIBA EuroBasket 2025, Sochan was ruled out for the season opener after an MRI confirmed he suffered a sprained left wrist while doing five-on-five work at practice Wednesday.

A team spokesman said Thursday the injury is minor and the club expects Sochan “to be back in a couple of games.” But for now, he is set to join De’Aaron Fox on the bench in street clothes when the Spurs kick things off against the Mavericks, meaning they will be down two key rotation players when they face a team boasting 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis, five-time All-Star Klay Thompson and No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg but is without nine-time All-Star Kyrie Irving (knee).

Fox revealed at the start of training camp more than two weeks ago the team’s medical staff had already ruled him out for the opener due to a hamstring injury he suffered in the offseason. Spurs coach Mitch Johnson offered a positive report on Fox after practice Wednesday, saying the speedy point guard was “getting closer” to doing five-on-five work.

In addition to Sochan and Fox, the Spurs (4-0) will also be without Kelly Olynyk (heel) when they host Indiana (2-1) in their preseason finale Friday night.

Jordan McLaughlin (hamstring) is questionable. Olynyk and McLaughlin are expected to be ready to go in Dallas, a team spokesman said.

Sochan’s latest injury comes as Monday’s deadline for the Spurs to give him a contract extension looms.

The Spurs gave Fox a four-year, $229 million maximum contract extension this summer, but Spurs general manager Brian Wright was non-committal at the start of training camp when asked about other players eligible for extensions, a list that includes Sochan, 22.

If the Spurs don’t extend him, he will be a restricted free agent after this season, meaning the Spurs will have the right to match any offers he receives from other teams.

“We’ll see,” Wright said. “You’ve got to walk those things out day by day and we’re trying to build a team now and see how all the pieces fit, so we’ll see how that comes together.”

Several injuries, including ankle and thumb ailments that required surgery, have plagued Sochan throughout his career after the Spurs selected him ninth overall in the 2022 NBA Draft following his freshman season at Baylor.

Sochan played in 56 games as a rookie, 74 as a sophomore and 54 last season, when he averaged 11.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists while serving as the team’s top perimeter defender.

For his career, he’s averaging 11.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists.

Sochan shot just 30.8% from 3-point range on 1.7 attempts per game last season, but he said at the start of camp he spent much of the summer working on improving in that area.

“It’s not always going to be perfect, but a couple of things we’ve been working on is my wrist placement, elbow, how I raise the ball, how I catch the ball, footwork,” he said. "There’s been a lot of different things, but I think I’m in a good place.

“I’m super excited to show you that.”

Unfortunately for the Spurs, it will have to wait.
