Spurs’ Jeremy Sochan returns in midseason form as an instigator

San Antonio Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan, right, defends a shot from Los Angeles Lakers forward Jake LaRavia during the second half of an NBA basketball game Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2025, in Los Angeles. Sochan had a strong season debut in the Spurs’ loss to the Lakers.
LOS ANGELES - When the Houston Rockets study tape of the Spurs’ 118-116 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night, one thing is sure to jump out to them about Jeremy Sochan.
Just a game into his fourth NBA season, he’s already in midseason form as an instigator.
Sochan made his 2025-26 debut in Los Angeles after calf and wrist injuries kept him on the sidelines throughout the preseason and the first six games of the regular season.
Despite the long layoff, he finished with 16 points on 6 of 7 from the field while logging 23 minutes off the bench before fouling out with 13.3 seconds left in the game.
He also unapologetically continued to excel at getting under the skin of opponents. After checking into the game for the first time with 5:09 left in the first quarter, he immediately began trying to torment five-time All-Star Luka Doncic.
“I’m never going to change my character,” Sochan said. “That’s who I am. We can be friends after, but during I am going to try my best to (expletive) you up. Luka is one of the best in the world, so you got to try different things to (expletive) with him and piss him off.”
Doncic finished with 35 points and 13 rebounds in 42 minutes. But Stephon Castle, with some help from Sochan, made him work for it, forcing him into an inefficient 9 of 27 from the field in a game. Doncic also hit 13 of 17 from the foul line in a game that lasted nearly three hours because the teams combined for a whopping 66 fouls and took a combined 84 free throws.
In addition to Sochan, Victor Wembanyama and Harrison Barnes also fouled out in the final 1:40.
The Spurs, who are set to open NBA Cup play at 6:30 p.m. Friday at home against the Rockets, enjoyed a 12-point lead late in the third quarter before the Lakers finished the game on a 21-10 run. The Spurs still had a chance to pull out an improbable win after the Marcus Smart committed an inbound violation following Kelly Olynyk’s putback layup with 1.2 seconds left and L.A. leading by the final score.
Julian Champagnie then drew a foul while trying to tip in the inbound pass, but the forward missed his first free throw with 0.2 seconds left. Keldon Johnson failed to tip in his second miss, and the Lakers had their fifth win in a row to move ahead of the Spurs in the West standings at 6-2.
It was the Spurs’ second loss in a row after a franchise-best 5-0 start, and it came with Wembanyama struggling through his second subpar offensive outing against swarming double- and sometimes triple-teams. Three days after he scored just nine points in a 130-118 loss at Phoenix, the 7-foot-4 All-Star center finished with 19 points on 5 of 14 before he fouled out for only the second time in his career.
Sochan wasn’t the only player to make his season debut for the Spurs.
Olynyk, the 13th-year forward/center acquired in an offseason trade with Washington, logged his first appearance for San Antonio after a long layoff that started with heel surgery in April after a stint with the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Spurs also welcomed back guard Lindy Waters III, who they signed in the offseason and has been out since the final week of the preseason due to a bilateral eye procedure.
Waters finished with six points on 2 of 2 from distance in 14 minutes. Olynyk had four points, four rebounds and three assists in nine minutes but struggled defensively.
Sochan, meanwhile, hit the ground running.
“Jeremy was great,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “His energy and defensive presence was awesome.”
The Spurs could finally wipe their injury list clean during this two-game, back-to-back homestand that ends against the Pelicans on Saturday.
Asked if point guard De’Aaron Fox, who has been out since August with a hamstring injury, and backup center Luke Kornet, who has missed the last four games with an ankle injury, could return this weekend, Johnson said, “They’re close. Yeah, we’re looking forward to bringing guys back.”
Regarding how long rookie guard Dylan Harper might be out after straining his right calf against Phoenix, Johnson offered little clarity:
“I don’t know the details other than we probably can knock wood a little bit,” he said.
One thing is certain: Sochan will be ready to go again come Friday. After the Spurs failed to meet a deadline to give him a contract extension, a move that resulted in him becoming a restricted free agent at the end of the season, he seems determined to have a strong season.
“I just got to be me and keep doing that,” he said of his aggressive play. "I don’t think everyone knows the full story (about the Spurs decision not to extend him). For me, I think I’ve always been a Spur and I always will, and I’m just happy to be in this locker room with the teammates. I’m going to do everything to be here.
“And for that to happen, it’s just being me, bringing 110% every day and energy.”
