Why Harrison Barnes is a lock for the San Antonio Spurs’ starting five

Some laws of nature are simply immutable.

The sun rises in the east. Spring follows winter. What goes up must come down.

In NBA circles, there is another irrevocable principle: If Harrison Barnes is on your roster, Harrison Barnes is playing in your game that night.

“I’m just trying to be out there for every game,” the veteran Spurs forward said. “That’s the biggest thing for me. I’m trying to play 82 games and put my body in a position to do that.”

Barnes enters his 14th season riding a streak of 304 consecutive games played, the second-longest in the league. He has appeared in all 82 games for three seasons running.

What’s more, Barnes has started all of those games too.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson says he hasn’t quite decided on every name that will be in his starting lineup when the club opens the regular season at Dallas on Oct. 22.

Smart money says the 34-year-old Barnes will be one of them. He hasn’t appeared in a game off the bench since the 2015-16 season with Golden State.

“If he’s not (starting), then that’s a good problem to have because it means we have a lot of guys playing well,” Johnson said. “Harrison’s been very, very consistent for a long time. He’s earned it.”

Though Johnson has yet to commit to an opening-night starting five, he has left a smattering of breadcrumbs.

Monday night in Indiana marked the first time this preseason the Spurs had enough healthy bodies available for Johnson to assemble a plausible starting five.

He went with Victor Wembanyama (of course), Stephon Castle, Julian Champagnie, Devin Vassell – and Barnes.

Wembanyama, Champagnie and Barnes are the only members of that group to have started in each of the club’s four exhibition contests to date.

Asked if it was safe to assume the lineup the Spurs used to beat the Pacers 124-108 would be the one he would roll out against the Mavericks next week, Johnson remained tentative.

“We have a lot of moving parts, and guys are still competing,” Johnson said. “There will be a lot of conversations, and those five guys will definitely be at the forefront of those conversations.”

There could be more clues come Friday, when the Spurs close the preseason at home with a rematch against the Pacers.

As it was Monday in Indiana, when the Spurs’ regulars played well into the fourth quarter, Johnson aims to treat the exhibition finale as something close to a dress rehearsal.

“We’ll continue to play it out,” Johnson said. “We’ve had people out long enough and we need to continue building.”

Expect Barnes to be a constant brick in that construction project.

He has already earned the respect of the younger players on the roster.

“The main thing I’ve learned from HB is probably just being a pro – being everywhere on time, taking care of your body, just the little stuff,” Castle said. “HB does all that to a T.”

Rookie Dylan Harper has only shared a locker room with Barnes for a few weeks, but already has found his oldest teammate to be a willing teacher.

“I’m new to this league and he’s been in this league a long time,” the 19-year-old Harper said. “I’ve got a lot to learn from him.”

It is fair to say Barnes has not exactly set the world on fire during the preseason.

He is averaging 3.5 points – less than the other Harrison on the roster, two-way player Harrison Ingram – while shooting a not-so-sweltering 13% from the floor (3 of 23).

At Indiana on Monday, Barnes 1 of 7 on his way to four points, including 1 of 5 from the 3-point stripe.

It is worth noting, however, Barnes had a lackluster preseason last year, too. He finished the season as the Spurs’ most consistent 3-point option while averaging 12.3 points.

As a longtime veteran, Barnes said it is more important to listen to his body than the box score at this time of year.

“You know the preparations you need to do to be ready for opening night,” Barnes said. “I think everyone is trying to get their body in the best shape health-wise and conditioning-wise, and just being at peace with everything going into the season.”

The only person who knows what Barnes needs in order to be ready for the games that count, Johnson said, is Barnes.

“With Harrison, he knows better than I do,” Johnson said.

Whatever it takes, Johnson expects Barnes will be in regular-season form by the time the regular season begins.

It is one of those immutable laws of nature.
