Spurs’ Jeremy Sochan set for surgery
Jeremy Sochan’s fast start has come to an abrupt end.
The Spurs forward is scheduled to undergo surgery this week after suffering a fracture in the proximal phalanx of his left thumb late in the first half of Monday’s 113-104 loss to the Clippers in Los Angeles, the team announced Tuesday.
The Spurs said they will provide “updates as appropriate.”
“He’s definitely a big part of our team, especially on the defensive end," Spurs forward Keldon Johnson said. "We’re going to miss him greatly. We’ve all got to step up while he’s gone. He was a huge part of our success.”
Rookie Stephon Castle started the second half in place of Sochan, who finished with four points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal in 12 minutes.
The Spurs (3-4) had a 10-point lead when Sochan exited after building a 26-point cushion in the first quarter.
Sochan has been a major bright spot for the Spurs in his third season, averaging 15.4 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals through seven games while also serving as their top on-ball defender.
The loss of Sochan is the latest setback for a team that learned Monday it would be without Gregg Popovich indefinitely after the Hall of Fame coach experienced a health issue before Saturday’s win over Minnesota. Wednesday’s game at Houston will mark the third game in a row Popovich, 75, has missed.
Assistant coach Mitch Johnson is the team’s interim head coach in Popovich’s absence.
The Spurs are also without guards Devin Vassell (recovery from offseason foot surgery) and Tre Jones (ankle sprain).
