Injury knocks the Spurs’ Jeremy Sochan out of EuroBasket 2025
Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun (28) blocks out San Antonio Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan (10) during the first half of an NBA basketball game at Toyota Center, Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2025, in Houston.
A calf injury will prevent Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan from playing for Poland in FIBA EuroBasket 2025, the Polish Basketball Federation announced Sunday.
“We are very sorry that Jeremy’s summer with the national team ends so soon,” Polish National Team Director Lukasz Koszarek told reporters, per EuroHoops.net. “He is a valued member of our squad and has a great connection with the team.”
Sochan reported discomfort in his calf last week, EuroHoops.net and other media outlets reported. He is expected to receive treatment in San Antonio and be ready for the start of the Spurs training camp in late September.
The Spurs preseason opener against China’s Guangzhou Loong Lions is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Frost Bank Center.
“I’m very disappointed, but due to a calf injury, I unfortunately won’t be able to play for Poland at this year’s EuroBasket,” Sochan said in a statement, per Polish reporter Mateusz Babiarz. "I’ve been working hard for this over the past few months, and the time I’ve had practicing and playing with the team has been incredible. This is a special group, and I was really looking forward to being a part of it.
“Fortunately, doctors predict I’ll be full recovered by the start of training camp for the upcoming NBA season.”
Spurs general manager Brian Wright also released a statement to reporters in Poland.
“Due to his injury, Jeremy received professional help in Poland,” Wright said. “The cooperation with the KoszKadra staff and management has always been exemplary. However, in this situation, the best option is for Jeremy to return to San Antonio.”
EuroBasket 2025 is set to start in late August. More than 30 players under NBA contracts, including the Los Angeles Lakers’ Luka Doncic (Slovenia) and the Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece) are scheduled to play in the tournament.
Poland is hosting Group D of EuroBasket 2025, which includes France, Slovenia, Israel, Belgium and Iceland.
In 54 games last season, Sochan averaged 11.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. The 22-year-old Baylor alumnus is set to enter his fourth NBA season with career averages of 11.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 184 games, 149 of which he started.
Sochan isn’t the only Spur whose summer plans have been disrupted by a minor injury. Guard De’Aaron Fox recently canceled his planned appearances in Asia for the 2025 Curry Brand World Tour with Golden State Warriors star Stephon Curry due to what his Curry Brand World Tour host called a muscle strain, Sports Illustrated reported.
Details of the injury weren’t released.
