Why the Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama played 39 minutes Thursday night

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) celebrates with the endgame drum at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, March 5, 2026. The Spurs defeated the Pistons, 121-106.

The nearly 39 minutes Victor Wembanyama logged in Thursday night’s 121-106 win over Detroit marked the most he’s played since he recorded 40 in a win over Miami on Oct. 30, five games into the season.

The two-time All-Star center came into Thursday’s game averaging 29 minutes over his last 10 games and 27.2 over his last 35, a stretch that began after he missed 12 games with a calf injury.

But Spurs coach Mitch Johnson was quick to say that playing 30-plus won’t be the norm for the 22-year-old Frenchman, who dominated Detroit on his way to finishing with 38 points, 16 rebounds, five blocks and three assists.

“I won’t be playing Victor 39 minutes every game for the rest of the year,” Johnson said.

Johnson said the heavy workload Wembanyama carried against the Pistons was a way of rewarding him for how locked in he was from the opening tip.

“You talk about offense, defense, rebounding, screening, in a stance, communicating, doing two things at once defensively, minutes played — he dominated the game in every sense tonight,” Johnson said.

Wembanyama said he knows the Spurs medical staff will always look out for his health when it comes to playing time.

“When it’s about my body and my career, I do not give my trust easily, and they have it,” Wembanyama said. “I trust them very much and I know they have got a plan and they will allow me to play as much as possible and (within) reason, of course.”
