How long can the Spurs bring Victor Wembanyama off the bench?

Victor Wembanyama finished the Spurs’ stirring Christmas Day victory at Oklahoma City with a solid enough statistical line: 19 points, 11 rebounds and block.

The number that leapt most prominently out of his box score, however, was 26.

That was the number of minutes he logged off the bench in the 117-102 upset of the defending champion Thunder, the most he has played in a game since coming off a month-long stay on the injured list with a left calf strain.

“He would like to play more minutes,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “He would like to have everything that comes with that, which is shots and opportunities.”

The Spurs have continued to ease the 21-year-old Wembanyama back into the rotation in the seven games since his return, bringing the 2025 All-Star off the bench as a way to better massage his minutes.

It is a play Johnson has indicated will continue for the near future, as the Spurs opened a three-game homestand Saturday against Utah at the Frost Bank Center.

The Spurs went 9-3 during Wembanyama’s time on the shelf. Since returning to the floor, he has done his best to fit into the Spurs’ roll.

The Spurs entered Saturday’s game on an eight-game winning streak, as the league does not count the team’s loss against New York in the NBA Cup final as part of the standings.

The team has boasted seven different leading scorers during that stretch, with Wembanyama being but one of them.

“One thing that defines us is that we can use everybody in the court,” Wembanyama said. “We’re never going to let one guy take away from the collective. That’s what allows us to beat great teams.”

In six non-Cup games off the bench heading into Saturday, Wembanyama was averaging 18 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 21.6 minutes per game.

In 12 starts to open the season, Wembanyama averaged 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds and 3.6 blocks in 34.7 minutes.

“I think his willingness to just play the game and execute whatever the game is calling upon has been the most impressive,” Johnson said. “That can be screening, spacing, drawing two people and letting the next guy take advantage.”

It is clear Wembanyama will not be a bench player for much longer. He is likely to move back into the starting lineup long before he begins to receive serious consideration for NBA Sixth Man of the Year honors.

Wembanyama’s minutes are sure to tick up in time, as well.

For now, however, the Spurs have been pleased with the way their centerpiece big man has served as a star role player in reserve.

“That will continue to grow over time — the pattern recognition of what are they trying to take away from us, and then how can he help things and create advantages for himself and our team,” Johnson said. “I think he’s done a great job of balancing that while still trying to leave his impact on the game.”

Harper-Bailey Rutgers reunion on hold

Spurs rookie Dylan Harper missed a chance for an on-court reunion with his former Rutgers teammate when Ace Bailey suffered a hip flexor injury in Utah’s victory over Detroit on Friday.

Harper, drafted No. 2 overall, and Bailey, the fifth overall pick, represent the two highest draft selections in the history of the Rutgers program.

The pair remain close and “talk every day,” Harper said.

“When we talk it’s not really about basketball,” Harper said. “Our friendship wasn’t totally based on basketball. We call each other and talk about video games, cars, things like that.”

Both former Scarlet Knights are out to strong starts in their professional careers.

Heading into Saturday, Harper was averaging 12.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists off the bench. Bailey was averaging 10.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists, mostly as a Jazz starter.

Both are ranked in the top nine among rookie scorers.

Harper said he’s rooting for his friend and former teammate to get healthy and continue his maturation to the NBA.

“The league is probably the biggest adjustment for any of us to go through,” Harper said. “He’s with a great organization. He’ll learn from those guys and the coaches and the front office. It’s great for him.”

Fox out with groin issue

The Spurs ruled starting point guard De’Aaron Fox out for Saturday’s game with left abductor tightness.

The 28-year-old Fox is considered day to day.

The Spurs’ second-leading scorer at 21.9 points per game, Fox was coming off a sizzling 29-point performance in the Spurs thumping of OKC on Christmas Day.

It marked the first game the Fox has missed since Nov. 7.

Harper said it will be up to the rest of the Spurs’ backcourt rotation to make up for Fox’s absence.

“I think we all carry some sense of confidence and some sense of we’re going to be OK,” Harper said. “Obviously, that’s a big piece missing. We all know if we’ve got to pick up some of the load for a night, we’re capable of doing it.”
