Victor Wembanyama’s return from injury comes with minutes cap

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) plays against the Cleveland Cavaliers during the second half of an NBA game at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Monday, Dec. 29, 2025. The Spurs fell 113-101 to the Cavaliers.

Victor Wembanyama can admit it.

When it comes to being a medical patient, he is not always all that patient.

For a full 24 hours before the Spurs’ game at Memphis on Tuesday, the All-Star center was pestering the team’s medical staff to take him off the injured list and just let him play.

He wasn’t taking no for an answer.

“I’m always pressing,” Wembanyama said with a grin. “They have to be mentally strong.”

Wembanyama won the argument this time, with some all-too-familiar trade-offs.

He was allowed to play against the Grizzlies after a two-game absence while dealing with a bone bruise in his left knee. But he would come off the bench and perform on a tight 20-minute restriction.

The results were frustratingly mixed for both Wembanyama and the Spurs.

Wembanyama ended with 30 points, the most he has scored as a reserve in his career, but was forced to watch the final 3:46 of a tight 106-105 loss powerless from the FedExForum bench.

That part, Wembanyama acknowledged, was “very hard.”

“I’ve got to trust the process, got to trust my staff,” Wembanyama said. “Basketball, it’s a team thing. We have to trust each other but at the same time hold each other accountable.”

Wembanyama suffered the bone bruise in a New Year’s Eve victory over New York. He was at least relieved that his latest stint on the injured list turned out to be a short one.

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) leaves the court during the fourth quarter of an NBA game in San Antonio, Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025. Wembanyama scored 31 points to help the Spurs beat the Knicks 134-132.

Leaving Memphis, Wembanyama was expected to play in Wednesday’s nationally televised game against the Los Angeles Lakers at the Frost Bank Center, barring any residual soreness stemming from the game against the Grizzlies.

“It’s tough on that kid,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “He’s got a lot of yo-yoing and back and forth. We’re trying to support him the best we can.”

Wembanyama, who turned 22 last Sunday, will come off the bench and remain on a minutes restriction for the foreseeable future, Johnson said.

It is an approach similar to the one the team employed when Wembanyama returned last month from a left calf strain that cost him 12 games. Tuesday marked the seventh time this season Wembanyama has come off the bench. He has yet to log more than 28 minutes since a Nov. 14 defeat against Golden State, the game in which he strained his calf.

“We’ll be extremely mindful of the situation, as we have been and will continue to be,” Johnson said. “It’s just going to be one of those living, breathing kind of situations that we’re going to continue to juggle and balance until we don’t.”

The Spurs admit none of this is optimal.

“It’s hard,” forward Julian Champagnie said. “He’s kind of the centerpiece of what we’re doing. A lot of our stuff is centered around him. It’s tough for us as a team when he’s yo-yoing — he’s playing, then he’s not playing. We all know he wants to be out there, and we have to figure it out when he’s there or when he’s not there.”

It took a bit of a back-and-forth just to get Wembanyama to Memphis in the first place.

A few hours before the team plane was set to depart for Tennessee on Monday, there was still question as to whether the 7-foot-4 Frenchman would be on it.

Wembanyama talked himself onto the charter flight, and went through a successful shootaround session Tuesday morning in Memphis.

Then he made his final pitch to the team’s medical staff.

“His pitch is just always, ‘I can play. I’m ready to go. I’m good to go,’” Johnson said. “You love that mentality and competitiveness.”

The game did not end as planned for Wembanyama and the Spurs. With 3:46 to play, Wembanyama sank a transition 3-pointer to put the Spurs ahead 98-97.

His night, however, was over.

Memphis called timeout, and Wembanyama headed to the bench. He was out of minutes, having logged 21:01 of court time.

The game featured five lead changes from there, with Wembanyama as helpless to aid his team’s cause as the popcorn vendor.

The Grizzlies eventually took the game thanks to a pair of Cam Spencer jumpers in the final 1:26.

“Definitely could have used him,” Champagnie said of Wembanyama.

Johnson agreed. Had it been allowed, he would have loved to have had Wembanyama at his disposal in the final moments Tuesday.

Instead, Johnson was forced to coach down the stretch Tuesday with his best player tied behind his back, a situation exacerbated when Stephon Castle — the team’s top perimeter defender — fouled out late in the fourth quarter.

Even so, Johnson reiterated the need to stick with a plan the Spurs view as necessary. The club views Wembanyama as an asset to be protected — occasionally from himself.

“We want him to be healthy for years, not just trying to win the next couple games or whatever it may be,” Johnson said. “We have a duty to support him in a way that is in the best interest of him now, and for a very long time. He’s too important to this league, and he deserves that.”
