TORONTO — Rest hasn’t come easy lately for Victor Wembanyama.
It showed Wednesday night, but the 22-year-old Frenchman and the Spurs fought their way through it.
The Spurs overcame a 15-point third quarter deficit to outlast the Toronto Raptors 110-107 at Scotiabank Arena on a night Wembanyama scored just 12 points — half his season average — on 3-of-12 shooting, including 1 of 6 from 3-point range. He connected on 5 of 6 foul shots, but his only miss came with 8.7 seconds left with the Spurs leading by the final score.
The Raptors had a chance to tie it coming out of a timeout, but Brandon Ingram missed a step-back corner 3 with 5.4 seconds. Wembanyama grabbed the rebound to secure the win, the Spurs’ 10th in a row, their longest streak since they strung together 13 in 2015-16.
The Spurs improved to 42-16 to clinch their first winning season since 2018-19. The Raptors fell to 34-25.
Wembanyama blamed his struggles, which included a season low for made field goals, on a lack of rest due in part to a taxing schedule since the All-Star Game in Inglewood, Calif.
“I didn’t recover tonight,” he said. “With all the time changes from L.A. to here, and coming late from Detroit, I wasn’t recovered today. I need to do a better job getting my treatment in, getting more sleep. I couldn’t sleep last night. Yeah, I wasn’t in shape today.”
The Spurs have played every other day since Feb. 19, winning a pair at home before beating the Pistons 114-103 Monday night. Wembanyama had 21 points in Detroit on 6-of-16 shooting to go along with 17 rebounds, six blocks, four assists and a steal.
He said his shooting woes in that game had a lot to do with the Pistons’ bruising defense.
“This is what they do. If they don’t want you score, they’re not going to let you score,” said Wembanyama, who entered Thursday night’s game at Brooklyn averaging 30.2 minutes over his last four games.
As he did in Detroit, Wembanyama excelled on defense against the Raptors, finishing with eight rebounds and five blocks, including a big one on a running reverse layup attempt by former Spur Jakob Poeltl with 44 seconds left and the Spurs leading 108-104.
Wembanyama had two other blocks in the fourth, which helped make up for the Spurs going 2 for 6 at the foul line in the final 16 seconds. For the game, they hit just 13 of 23.

“Against him at the rim, as you can see down the stretch, it was his blocked shots that kind of swing the game,” Raptors coach Darko Rajakovic.
While Wembanyama pinned his Toronto troubles on a lack of rest, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson tipped his cap to the Raptors, calling them a “very physical team that can apply pressure.”
“They do a great job trying to speed you up and typically punish you for playing isolation basketball,” Johnson said. “They’re so good on the ball and they swarm.”
Devin Vassell led the Spurs with 21 points after scoring 28 in Detroit. It’s the first time he’s posted consecutive 20-plus games since he did it three games in a row in late November.
De’Aaron Fox missed 6-of-8 free throws but scored eight of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, and rookie Dylan Harper had 15, all in the first half, on 7-of-8 shooting. The Spurs also got double-digit scoring from Stephon Castle (13) and Julian Champagnie (10).
“We’ve know, and I feel like it’s been apparent this year, that we have a deep team,” said Fox, whose driving, behind-the-basket 10-foot floater gave the Spurs a 108-104 lead. “We have guys that have missed games and we are still able to stay afloat and win games. I don’t think it’s a surprise that when someone has an off night, even someone of Victor’s caliber, we have enough to kind of weather that.”
Ingram and Immanuel Quickley each had 20 points for Toronto, which was playing on the second night of a back-to-back after losing to Oklahoma City on Tuesday.
The Raptors ended the third quarter on a 21-9 run to lead 90-78 going into the fourth but missed nine straight shots to start the quarter.
Before the game, Rajakovic talked about how much he enjoyed coaching Wembanyama at the All-Star Game as part of the international squad in the new “U.S. vs. the World” format. Despite going 0-2 in the three-team, round-robin tournament, Wembanyama earned praise for going all out at an event that typically sees players go through the motions.
“He’s a super focused kid,” Rajakovic said. “He’s really on a mission. You can see the way he’s doing his treatments with trainers and how he’s activating and how he’s asking questions in timeouts and communicating with teammates. He wants to be one of the best players in the league and he has all the tools to do that. He’s very, very impressive.”
