Spurs sweep NBA’s monthly West awards after going 11-0 in February
The Spurs swept the NBA’s monthly Western Conference awards after going 11-0 in February.
It was just the third time in franchise history the Spurs have gone undefeated in a calendar month (10 games minimum) and the 11-game winning streak was its longest since 2015-16.
It’s only the third time a team has earned player, rookie and coach of the month honors in the same month since 1982-1983 and the first time ever in the West, the NBA said.
Wembanyama finished the month averaging 22.5 points, 11.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, a league-leading 3.45 blocks and 1.36 steals. He posted seven double-doubles and was the only player in the NBA to record more than 200 points, 100 rebounds and 15 steals during the month.
Wembanyama’s 38 blocks were 13 more than the next closest player. He had five or more blocks in four games and posted a 100.0 defensive rating. It’s his second straight defensive player of the month selection and third since the award’s inception in 2024-25.
Harper said having Wembanyama protecting the rim is a “beautiful” situation for himself and the team’s other perimeter defenders. With Wembanyama serving as a suffocating safety man, the Spurs ranked first in the West last month with a defensive rating of 106.2.
“You can send people to Vic,” Harper said. “That’s part of the reason why we’re so good defensively on the ball. We have all the confidence in the world he’s going to clean it up for us.”
Harper was named the top rookie after averaging 12.5 points, 4.9 assists and 3.9 rebounds in 10 games while shooting 55.4% from the field. He was one of two West rookies to score 100-plus points while shooting better than 55% during the month and the only player to do so without a start.
Harper’s strong month came after he slumped in January.
“He’s really getting confident and comfortable in the league,” Spurs guard Devin Vassell said. “He went through a stretch where maybe he just wasn’t himself. He wasn’t mentally wherever he is at now. But right now he’s turned that corner, and he’s being ultra-aggressive. That’s what we need from him.”
Johnson earned his second coach of the month honor this season after also receiving it in December. He’s the first Spurs coach to collect multiple coach of the month honors in a season since Gregg Popovich in 2011-12.
The Spurs’ biggest win in the month in terms of toppling a top contender came on Feb. 23 when they beat the East-leading Pistons 114-103 in Detroit. Before the game, Detroit coach J.B. Bickerstaff praised the Spurs for selecting Johnson, 39, to succeed Gregg Popovich after the Hall of Famer retired from coaching in May.
“He’s an extremely talented coach, great dude, great communicator, great leader,” Detroit coach J.B. Bickerstaff said of Johnson, who served as acting coach of the Spurs last season after Popovich suffered a stroke just five games into the campaign.
