NBA names Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama Defensive Player of the Month

But one thing that never faltered in the month was his dominant play on the defensive end.
The NBA on Tuesday named the 7-foot-4 Frenchman its Western Conference Defensive Player of the Month after he helped lead the Spurs to an 11-0 record with 3.5 blocks and 9.3 defensive rebounds per game. He’s now won the award in back-to-back months.
Spurs rookie guard Dylan Harper said having Wembanyama protecting the rim is a “beautiful” situation for himself and the team’s other perimeter defenders. With Wembanyama serving as a suffocating safety man, the Spurs ranked first in the West last month with a defensive rating of 106.2.
“You can send people to Vic,” Harper said. “That’s part of the reason why we’re so good defensively on the ball. We have all the confidence in the world he’s going to clean it up for us.”
Boston guard and former Spur Derrick White was named the Eastern Conference’s top defender for February after leading the league’s guards in contested shots with 75. The Celtics ranked first in the East in defensive rating last month at 105.5.
It’s the third time Wembanyama has received the monthly honor for his defense. When he won the award in January, he recorded 132 rebounds, 29 blocks and 12 steals in 13 games as the only player in the West to notch 100-plus rebounds, 25-plus blocks and 10-plus steals.
