Despite historic December, Wembanyama bypassed for Player of Month
Despite posting history-making numbers in December, the Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama lost out on winning the Western Conference Player of the Month to Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Wembanyama become the first player in NBA history with 300 points, 100 rebounds, 50 blocks, 50 assists and 40 3-pointers in a single month. Over 12 games, he averaged 28.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 4.4 blocks and 3.6 3-pointers while shooting 37.7% from beyond the arc in leading the Spurs to a 7-5 record. They were 7-7 overall in December.
But Gilgeous-Alexander received the honor after averaging 33.3 points and 2.5 steals while shooting 56.3% from the field in leading the Thunder to a 12-1 record.
New York’s Karl Anthony-Towns was honored in the East after averaging 23.2 points and 14.6 rebounds in pushing the Knicks to a 12-2 showing.
Wembanyama was one of 10 players nominated for the honor in the West. He also lost out to Memphis’ Jaren Jackson Jr. for the Western Conference Defensive Player of the Month after winning the award for October/November in the inaugural season of the honor.
Wembanyama leads the NBA in blocks per game, but Jackson Jr. totaled 23 steals and 22 blocks in 14 games to guide the Grizzlies to a 10-4 record.
Wembanyama twice scored 42 points in a game during the month, including in a Christmas Day loss to the Knicks in New York in which he also had 18 rebounds, four assists and four blocks in a career-high 40 minutes.
“He is playing stronger, more physical, more fundamentally sound, and it’s crazy how spectacular his simple is,” acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said.
Another coach agreed.
“He’s been a lot more aggressive,” said the Los Angeles Clippers’ Ty Lue before Wembanyama had 27 points, nine rebounds, five assists, three blocks and one steal in just 26 minutes in leading the Spurs to a 122-86 rout of the Clippers on New Year’s Eve.
“You saw last year to this year, he’s been a lot more aggressive. The job that Pop (Gregg Popovich) has done with him, and Mitch has done a fantastic job also, of letting him be him but also putting him in great positions to be successful.”
With Wembanyama leading the way, the Spurs took a 17-16 record into 2025, the first time they have had a winning record at the turn of the calendar since the 2018-19 season.
