The accolades keep coming the Spurs way after their historic February run. This is Johnson’s second Coach of the Month award. He also won it for the month of December after the Spurs went on an eight-game winning streak and made it to the NBA Cup Finals despite playing much of the month either without Wemby or with him on minutes restrictions. The Spurs currently have the third best record in the league and second best in the West at 43-17. They have experienced one of the biggest rises this season, and as a result, Johnson should be a candidate for Coach of the Year, as well. What an accomplishment that would be for a first-year head coach.

The Spurs will have several plaques to hand out when they return from the Rodeo Road Trip on Thursday to face the Detroit Pistons. Joining Johnson with monthly awards are Dylan Harper as Western Conference Rookie of the Month and Victor Wembanyama, who won both Western Conference Defensive Player of the Month and over all Western Conference Player of the Month. This also made the Spurs the first team in NBA history to sweep an entire month of the awards.

Mitch Johnson continues to rack up accolades and praise for the job he’s done coaching the Spurs in his first season season as their head coach.

The NBA on Tuesday named Johnson its Western Conference Coach of the Month for February. He earned his second career Coach of the Month award after guiding the Spurs to a league-best 11-0 record as the Spurs amassed their longest winning streak since winning 13 in a row in 2015-16.

The Spurs’ biggest win in the month came on Feb. 23 when they beat the East-leading Pistons 114-103 in Detroit. Before the game, Detroit coach J.B. Bickerstaff praised the Spurs for selecting Johnson, 39, to succeed Gregg Popovich after the Hall of Famer retired from coaching in May.

“He’s an extremely talented coach, great dude, great communicator, great leader,” Detroit coach J.B. Bickerstaff said of Johnson, who served as acting coach of the Spurs last season after Popovich suffered a stroke just five games into the campaign.

Cleveland’s Kenny Atkinson won the award in the East after guiding the Cavaliers to an 8-3 mark.

Johnson also earned West Coach of the Month honors in December after guiding the Spurs to a league-best 11-3 record, including a run to the NBA Cup Championship Game and a 6-1 road record. In December, the Spurs recorded three victories over West-leading Oklahoma City and a win over East-power New York after the Knicks beat them in the Cup Final.

“They’re having a great season. Mitch is doing a hell of a job," Golden State coach Steve Kerr said before the Warriors lost to the Spurs by 13 points on Feb. 11. "They’ve obviously nailed the draft the last few years. They’re really good on both sides of the ball. Just a very impressive team and I’m happy for them. Being a former Spur I want them to do well. … Love Pop and (Spurs CEO) R.C. (Buford), and still have a lot of friends in the organization. They’ve been through the wilderness a little bit, this last decade or less than that, the last six, seven years. So it’s good to see them clicking again.”
