Spurs’ Harrison Barnes believes Adam Silver made an All-Star mistake

LOS ANGELES — With Golden State star Stephen Curry nursing a right knee injury, NBA commissioner Adam Silver awoke Tuesday needing to select a replacement player for Sunday’s All-Star tournament.

Spurs forward Harrison Barnes looked around his team’s locker room at Crypto.com Arena and saw a couple of prime candidates.

Fox and teammate Stephon Castle were shut out of NBA All-Star selections after NBA commissioner Adam Silver selected Toronto’s Brandon Ingram as an injury replacement for Stephen Curry.

Stephon Castle or De’Aaron Fox perhaps?

“It would be criminal if him or Fox didn’t get a look,” Barnes said.

Ultimately, there would be no Steph-for-Steph All-Star swap.

Silver chose Toronto’s Brandon Ingram to fill in for Curry, affording the 6-foot-8 forward his second All-Star selection and first since 2019-20.

Ingram joins Raptors teammate Scottie Barnes as an All-Star, giving the fifth-place team in the Eastern Conference two representatives in Sunday’s main event at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles.

Victor Wembanyama remains the Spurs’ lone All-Star tournament participant.

Given the Spurs’ 36-16 record heading into Tuesday, Harrison Barnes said he hopes Castle and Fox were at least considered for the open slot.

“We’re No. 2 in the West,” Barnes said before Tuesday’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers. “Teams below us have two All-Stars. I don’t know a case where if you’re talking about having an impact on winning, either of them shouldn’t be selected and/or at least under consideration.”

Fox ranks second on the Spurs in scoring at 19.5 points per game, while also doling out 6.2 assists.

A one-time All-Star during his seven seasons in Sacramento, Fox said he has learned not to look for much rhyme or reason from the selections.

“I saw the team with the worst record have an All-Star,” said Fox, referring to Indiana’s Pascal Siakam. “I think when I was traded here (last February), I was averaging 25 (points) and I wasn’t (selected). So I couldn’t care less.”

Castle, for his part, said he wasn’t exactly expecting a call from the commissioner’s office Tuesday morning despite a star-worthy start to his second NBA campaign.

Shut out of Sunday’s tournament, Castle said he is looking forward to at least participating in Friday’s Rising Stars Challenge. He is set to share the floor with rookie teammate Dylan Harper in that event.

“I’m blessed even to be a part of All-Star weekend,” Castle said. “I wasn’t looking for a call, but if it happened it would have been cool.”

It has already been an honor-filled trip to L.A. for the 20-year-old Castle, who a day earlier learned he had earned his first career Western Conference Player of the Week award while the team’s charter was in flight.

Castle and teammate De’Aaron Fox were shut out of NBA All-Star selections after NBA commissioner Adam Silver selected Toronto’s Brandon Ingram as an injury replacement for Stephen Curry.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson stood up in the aisle to make the announcement.

Castle called the news “unexpected.”

“I knew something was coming,” said Castle, who is the NBA’s reigning Rookie of the Year. “We’ve had a Player of the Week before. I didn’t know it was me. I had no clue.”

In three games during the week ending Feb. 8, Castle averaged 24 points, 7.3 rebounds, 7.3 assists and 3.0 steals in 26.7 minutes while shooting 63%.

He capped that run with a dazzling 40-point, 12-rebound, 12-assist triple-double in the Spurs’ 138-125 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday.

It was the third 40-point triple-double in Spurs franchise history, with Hall of Fame center David Robinson accounting for the other two.

Castle entered Tuesday averaging 17 points, a team-high seven assists and 5.7 rebounds per game. He leads the Spurs in steals with 58.

The Player of the Week award, Barnes said, should be the “first of many” for Castle.

“He’s been playing great,” Barnes said. “Last game, I think putting all together his ability to rebound, play make, defend at a high level, score the basketball. These are things he does for us on a nightly basis. It was good to see all that come together.”

It wasn’t enough to propel Castle to All-Star Sunday, but it was enough to garner Player of the Week.

Castle will certainly take it.

“It was a blessing for sure,” Castle said. “It felt good coming into the next couple of games. It was just a nice little add-on for me.”
