3 takeaways as Stephon Castle’s historic triple-double downs Mavs

San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) celebrates with teammates after an NBA basketball game against the Dallas Mavericks, Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026, in San Antonio.
In a game that featured the last two NBA Rookie of the Year winners and this season’s presumptive favorite, it was Stephon Castle who shone brightest Saturday.
The second-year Spurs guard had the game of his life, going for 40 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists to spearhead a 138-125 victory over Dallas at the Frost Bank Center.
Castle’s second career triple-double also came with three steals.
It marked a career high in scoring for Castle, surpassing the 33 points he scored at Charlotte last season, also on Feb. 7.
He is the youngest player in NBA history with 40-12-12 in a game, breaking the record previously held by Oscar Robertson (22 years, 33 days).

Victor Wembanyama added 16 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks and Devin Vassell threw in 17 points as the Spurs beat the Mavericks for the second time in three days.
At 36-16, the Spurs have logged their most victories before the All-Star break since 2016-17, when they registered 43 before the midseason hiatus.
Klay Thompson briefly rekindled his Splash Brothers days in the first half, and he finished with 19 points to lead the Mavericks.
Mavs rookie phenom Cooper Flagg ended with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting, ending a streak of four consecutive 30-point games.
The Spurs burst out to an 81-67 lead at half, posting their highest-scoring half of the season and fourth-highest in club history.
That did so with Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox, the team’s two leading scorers, combining for 16 points.
Castle wouldn’t let the Mavericks get closer in the second half. The Spurs pushed their lead to as high as 28 points before turning the game over to the end of the bench.
Here are three takeaways from Saturday’s victory:
1. Good sendoff for rodeo trip
Due to the upcoming influx of cattle and cowboys that is the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, Saturday marked the Spurs’ final game in their home arena until March 5.
Thanks to their most recent demolition of Dallas, the Spurs springboard into their annual rodeo trip on a four-game winning streak.
This year’s itinerary isn’t as daunting or demanding as some of them in the past.
The trip begins with a two-game back-to-back at the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors on Tuesday and Wednesday before going on hiatus for the All-Star break.
The Spurs come back from the break with a pair of “home” games in Austin against Phoenix and Sacramento on Feb. 19 and 21.
After that is the only “rodeo trip”-like part of this year’s rodeo trip: At Detroit, Toronto, Brooklyn, New York and Philadelphia.
The Spurs haven’t had a winning rodeo trip since 2015-16. Saturday’s victory gives the Spurs some momentum heading into this year’s trek
2. Castle’s day goes down in Spurs annals
Before Saturday, only one player in Spurs history had recorded a 40-point triple double: David Robinson, who did it twice.
Now add Castle’s name to the list.
Robinson’s most recent 40-point triple double came Nov. 9, 1993 against Minnesota — nearly 11 years before the 21-year-old Castle was born.
Castle got the 10th rebound he needed to complete his triple-double on the defensive end with 6:38 to go.
Moments later, he added an 11th rebound jamming home a missed Devin Vassell jumper for his 39th and 40th points.
All in all, it is a night Castle won’t soon forget.
3. Bryant hints at things to come
Slowly but surely, rookie forward Carter Bryant is forcing his way into the Spurs’ playing rotation.
The 14th pick in last year’s draft equaled a career high with 11 points Saturday, all in the first half. He was instrumental in a second quarter that took the Spurs from a tooth-and-nail fight toward a blowout win.
In one three-minute span, Bryant knocked down three 3-pointers. He blocked a 3-point try by Max Christie and another jumper from Cody Martin.
Bryant also rose to swat away a Flagg bank shot, but was (correctly) called for goal-tending after catching the ball coming off the glass.
After the game, coach Mitch Johnson singled out Bryant’s second-quarter energy burst as the moment that flipped the game.
The Spurs did not make a move for a bigger wing at this week’s trade deadline. Johnson still doesn’t seem keen on playing Jeremy Sochan, who is (somewhat surprisingly) still around.
Bryant a big reason why.
If the Spurs can have him playing like this in April, he could give them the kind of moments that swing a playoff game.
