San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox (4) signals to his teammates as he leads a play around Atlanta Hawks guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker (7) at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Nov. 20, 2025.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox’s selection to the All-Star Game as an injury replacement thrilled his teammates, but they also had a friendly laugh at the taxing travel situation he faced after getting the news.

“It was funny because he sent a picture — he was like 20 minutes down the road from his house (in Houston), and he had to turn around,” Spurs guard Stephon Castle said, referring to Fox having to fly back to California after flying home from San Francisco, where his 27 points, eight assists and three steals led the Spurs to a 126-113 come-from-behind win over Golden State on Wednesday night.

“It was cool, though. I’m happy for him,” Castle added. “I told him the other day, ‘Hopefully, you end up being a replacement. You should have made it (as a reserve).’ So I’m happy for him.”

The NBA announced Thursday that commissioner Adam Silver made Fox an All-Star for the second time in his nine seasons after a calf strain forced two-time league MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo of Milwaukee out of the game.

“It’s funny, Fox was on the way back home. I think he was like 20 minutes out (from his home in Houston) and had to turn right back around,” Spurs rookie forward Carter Bryant said. "I (texted him) and said, ‘I know you’re mad.’

“But it is dope. He definitely deserved it. He works his tail off. He’s part of the head of the snake. I mean, he’s the point guard. Nothing happens without a great point guard and he’s been nothing short of that this year. We’ve been playing really good basketball and he absolutely deserves to be an All-Star.”

Spurs rookie guard Dylan Harper also kidded Fox about his travel predicament.

“We were on a plane (to L.A.) when we found out,” Harper said. “I texted him right away.”

Castle, Bryant and Harper spoke to reporters at a media event at a hotel in Santa Monica. Castle and Harper are set to participate in the Rising Stars mini-tournament Friday night. Harper will also be in the Shooting Stars competition on Saturday, which is when Bryant is scheduled to compete in the dunk contest.

Fox will join teammate Victor Wembanyama in the All-Star Game, which will feature a round-robin “U.S. versus the World” format on Sunday at Intuit Dome in Inglewood, Calif. Fox will play for the Stripes team coached by the Spurs’ Mitch Johnson. Wembanyama will play for the World team coached by Toronto’s Darko Rajaković

Fox’s selection came after Johnson complained at his pre-game media session Wednesday about the Spurs having only one All-Star representative even though they entered the break seeded second in the West behind Oklahoma City with a 38-16 record after winning six in a row.

“The season that we’re having, he’s a big part of that,” Castle said of Fox. '“He’s obviously one of our leaders, so, with other teams that we see have two All-Stars, I don’t see why we shouldn’t.”

Bryant said Fox, who is averaging 19.4 points, 6.3 assists and 1.3 steals, deserves to be an All-Star because he is “impacting winning.”

“There’s a lot of guys that average really high numbers and they don’t impact winning,” Bryant said “And when you can impact winning that means everything. Everybody’s seeing it. If you sit down and really turn on a game and watch it, you see he’s guarding his tail off, he’s making shots, making the right play, understanding his gravity as offensive player.”

Fox has also helped mentor Harper, who the Spurs selected No. 2 overall in the June draft.

“He’s helped me in many ways, just navigating through my rookie year,” Harper said. “He’s a vet that I love having (as a mentor).”

Castle praised Fox for “giving us a sense of stability when he has the ball.”

“He’s able to make a play out of nothing,” the 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year said. “Late clock, ball in his hand, we will get something good out of it. He’s been great for us all year and super consistent. He’s a big reason why we’re number two in the West.”
