DENVER — Keldon Johnson can still remember the headaches De’Aaron Fox caused for the Spurs when he was in Sacramento.

Not only is Fox one of the NBA’s speediest players, he is also one of the craftiest, a foul-drawing, clutch-shot-making monster.

“He’s a tough guard to handle,” Johnson said.

After playing alongside Fox for 26 games following last February’s trade from Sacramento, Johnson has come to an unassailable conclusion about his newest All-Star teammate.

“It’s a lot better having him on your team,” Johnson said.

That has been especially true over the past week and a half, as injuries have taken a toll on the Spurs’ starting lineup.

Victor Wembanyama, the team’s leading scorer, was set to miss his sixth straight game Friday in Denver while dealing with a left calf strain. Stephon Castle, one of the team’s leading ball-handlers, was slated to miss his fifth consecutive with a hip flexor strain.

The 28-year-old Fox has come to the Spurs’ rescue.

In the five games the Spurs faced without Wembanyama before Friday, Fox averaged 28.6 points, 6.8 assists and 1.8 steals while shooting 50% from the floor (46 of 92).

The 6-foot-3 Fox has topped 26 points in each of those contests, his longest such stretch since joining the Spurs.

“That’s what Fox does,” Spurs guard Devin Vassell said. “I’ve watched it for a lot of years. Now to be a part of it, it makes things a lot easier.”

Fox has been a major reason the Spurs won four of their first five games with Wembanyama shelved.

He arrived in Denver fresh off his best game in a Spurs uniform, a 37-point opus Wednesday in Portland that helped guide the Spurs to a 115-102 victory.

Fox started slowly against the Trail Blazers, missing all four of his shot attempts in the first quarter.

He eventually found his shot, and found his way to the foul line — where he made all 12 attempts — and ended with his highest-scoring night in a Spurs uniform. His previous high had been 32, notched against Dallas last March in Fox’s final game before being shut down for pinkie finger surgery.

Fox scored 14 of his points in the fourth quarter as the Spurs held the Blazers at bay.

“The team is looking for me to be aggressive, regardless if I’m making shots or not,” said Fox, who added eight assists, six rebounds and three steals to his ledger in Portland. “Being aggressive, getting into the paint, seeing the ball go in — that all opens things up for me.”

Fox was not meant to be a one-man show in San Antonio.

The Spurs initially traded for Fox — and then handed him the largest contract in Spurs’ history — picturing him playing with Wembanyama, Castle and promising rookie guard Dylan Harper.

Those four players have yet to be healthy for the same game this season.

Instead, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson has been forced to mix and match lineups each night to compensate for a missing piece.

Lately, the Spurs’ coaching staff has adjusted the rotation to allow Fox to stay in the game for longer stretches when he’s heating up.

“We’ve done a better job in the sub patterns to let him run hot when he needs to run hot, then get him out and then get him back in,” Mitch Johnson said. “He does a great job of getting his teammates involved, then knowing when it’s time to lead us with the basketball in his hands.”

Having signed a four-year extension worth a team-record $229 million in August, Fox has proven up to the challenge.

In that, Mitch Johnson has been pleased but not surprised with Fox’s offensive surge. He has only been doing it for nine-plus seasons in the NBA.

“He’s as dynamic as any guard in the league, and our guys look up to him,” Mitch Johnson said. “We’re excited to get our team healthy, but it’s nice just to see him in a Spurs jersey hitting his stride.”

For the Spurs, it certainly beats the alternative of seeing Fox hit his stride in another team’s jersey.
