How De’Aaron Fox has lifted his game with Wembanyama out

San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox (4) signals to his teammates as he leads a play around Atlanta Hawks guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker (7) at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Nov. 20, 2025.
When All-Star center Victor Wembanyama went on the shelf earlier this week with a calf strain, the Spurs knew it would be impossible to replace their leading scorer, rebounder and shot-blocker with one player.
It is a good thing they still have their highest-paid player to help with at least one of those categories.
In the three games without Wembanyama, Fox is averaging 26.7 points to go with 7.7 assists while shooting 53.6% (30 of 56) from the floor.
“Obviously De’Aaron’s been great,” forward Keldon Johnson said. “He’s really carried us.”
The Spurs traded for Fox last February and then awarded him the largest contract in club history ($229 million) with the hopes he would be the perfect pick-and-roll running mate with Wembanyama.
The 28-year-old All-Star has also proven vital in carrying the Spurs’ offense with Wembanyama sidelined. He was at it again Thursday in a 135-126 victory over Atlanta, when Fox scored 26 points to go with nine assists.
It was his third consecutive game with at least 25 points, the longest streak of his Spurs career.
“He’s got a lot we’re asking from him right now,” coach Mitch Johnson said.
Fox is the first to say he has help, even with fellow starters Wembanyama and Stephon Castle sidelined.
In Thursday’s victory, the Spurs had two other players reach 20 points – Keldon Johnson (25) and Julian Champagnie (20).
It was Johnson’s ninth career game of at least 25 points on the bench, the third most in Spurs history behind Manu Ginobili (36) and Patty Mills (10).
“That’s what I’m talking about when I’m saying we have a team,” Fox said. “We have guys who are coming off the bench who can affect the game offensively, affect the game defensively, affect the game with just energy in itself.”

San Antonio Spurs forward Julian Champagnie (30) gestures after making a three-pointer in the fourth quarter against the Atlanta Hawks at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Nov. 20, 2025. The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Atlanta Hawks 135-126.
Champagnie joins slam-dunk display
The lane opened up for Julian Champagnie late in Thursday’s game and he surprised even himself.
He got all the way to the rim and completed a dunk.
“It’s about time,” Champagnie said.
The 6-foot-8 Champagnie has become infamous in the Spurs’ locker room for almost-but-not-quite dunks. Even after Thursday, he has only made three of them this season – eighth on the team.
Champagnie has a secret about his many ill-fated forays into the paint.
“Most of the time I’m not really trying to dunk those,” he said. “I’m just trying to get fouled.”
Midway through the fourth quarter Thursday, there was no Hawk near enough to Champagnie to attempt a foul.
It was part of a run of four consecutive Spurs slams – two from Jeremy Sochan, one from Champagnie and one from Devin Vassell.
UTSA ex finds niche in Atlanta
After a hardscrabble path to the NBA, former UTSA standout Keaton Wallace is turning heads in Atlanta.
“I have so much respect for him,” Hawks coach Quin Snyder said before Thursday’s contest.
Wallace played three seasons with the Roadrunners from 2017 to 2021, where he was a three-time All-Conference USA selection. In 2018-19, he teamed with Jhivvan Jackson to form the highest-scoring backcourt in the nation.
From there, Wallace scrapped his way up the ladder from the G League, to a two-way contract to a roster player in the NBA. In his second NBA season, the 26-year-old Wallace has emerged as a nightly rotation player for the Hawks, averaging 4.9 points and 2.9 assists in 15.7 minutes.
“The type of person he is, the discipline and hard work you have to have to take that path, like I said I just have a ton of respect for him,” Snyder said. “He’s got a presence. We talk about leadership, and he’s quietly one of those guys.”
Wallace scored six points with a pair of assists in his return to his old college stomping grounds Thursday.
