De’Aaron Fox delivered big time for the shorthanded Spurs on Sunday.
With Victor Wembanyama sidelined with a calf injury and Stephon Castle exiting after the first half with an injured hip, Fox posted season highs for points (28 on 11 of 20 from the field, including 4 of 8 from 3-point range) and assists (11 against only two turnovers) in the 123-110 win over Sacramento.
“I try to stay aggressive regardless of who’s out there, but obviously not having two guys who have the ball in their hands a lot” means more production in those areas, Fox said. “We had a group of guys that all stepped up, and for me, it was continuing to try to do what I’m doing and be a little more aggressive knowing I have other guys that are able to put the ball in the basket as well.”
Fox’s playmaking against his former team helped the Spurs land seven players in double figures, including Harrison Barnes with 20, and post a season-high 38 assists on 47 made field goals.
The Spurs (9-4) snapped a two-game losing streak by downing the Kings (3-11).
Fox said the ball movement reflects the Spurs desire to play up-tempo.
“You kind of see the assists pile up when you play that way,” he said. “We’re just trying to get out in transition on a make or miss. I think we have the best offense in the league right now after misses, but we want to be able to up that. We want to be able to up that after makes as well. And that’s just being able to keep the pace and keep the ball movement.”
Barnes said he thinks the best is yet to come for Fox, who missed all of training camp and the first eight games of the season with a hamstring injury.
“I think this is maybe his fifth game back and he didn’t have training camp, so there’s still the process of him getting his legs underneath him,” Barnes said. “But he is starting to get in form. As the season goes on, he’s just going to get better and better.”
