San Antonio Spurs guard De’aaron Fox (4) drives to the basket against Utah Jazz guard Walter Clayton Jr. (13) during the first half of an NBA basketball game, Thursday, Jan. 22, 2026, in Salt Lake City.
SALT LAKE CITY — The All-Star Game is just weeks away. Not that it matters to the Spurs’ De’Aaron Fox.
“I made it as a replacement,” he said of his lone appearance in the elite game, which came in 2023 when he was with Sacramento. “I averaged 26, 27 (points) on a team that was in position to make the playoffs and still didn’t get in, so I couldn’t care less about it.”
The eighth-year guard probably won’t make it again this season, but he proved Thursday night he remains one of the league’s best when it comes to closing games.
Fox scored 12 of his game-high 31 points in the final 6:54 to shoot the Spurs past the Utah Jazz 126-109 in a meeting of shorthanded teams.
The Spurs closed the game on a 27-10 run after it was tied 99-99 with nine minutes to go. Fox was 4 for 5 from 3-point range in the fourth, sinking all of them in a span of under four minutes. For the game, he hit a season-high 6 3s on 9 attempts.
He also had five assists and a block in 35 minutes.
“Terrific,” Keldon Johnson, who assisted on Fox’s first three 3-pointers in the period, said of Fox’s play down the stretch.
“He done showed up in so many big moments for us this season,” Johnson said. “Big-time players make big-time plays, and you can’t deny he’s done it at every level of basketball and he continues to do that for us now when we need it the most. Without him tonight, it’s a whole different game. But he’ll never get the credit that he deserves.”
Victor Wembanyama had 26 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks, and Johnson came off the bench for 21 points, a season-high five assists and a big block with 4:27 left in the game.
Wembanyama also finished 4 of 7 from beyond the arc to become the NBA’s career leader in games (14) with four-plus 3-pointers and four-plus blocks.
Julian Champagnie had 17 points powered by five 3s, and Stephon Castle had 16 points and eight assists as the Spurs (31-14, second in the West) won for the fourth time in their last five outings.
Rookie Ace Bailey had a season-high 25 points for the Jazz (15-30). Baylor alumnus Keyonte George contributed 23. Jusuf Nurkic added 17 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds for a triple-double in back-to-back games.
The win came two nights after the Spurs blew a 16-point second quarter lead to lose by five at Houston. They led by as many as 15 points in the second quarter in posting their second win in four days over Utah, who played without leading-scorer Lauri Markkanen (return to competition reconditioning) for the sixth game in a row.
“They definitely fought back, but we were able to finish the game off,” Fox said. “We have to continue to work on (protecting leads). We always talk about how a 20-point lead in the league now isn’t the same as it was probably (years ago) but good teams still have to find ways to put teams away. Whenever you get up big, especially if you’re still up big in the second half, you have to find a way to put teams away and that’s what we’re trying to figure out as a team, being able to put your foot on the (opponent’s) neck”
In addition to Fox’s shooting, the Spurs also benefited late from some tough defense on their way to outscoring Utah 29-17 in the fourth.
“Our defense picked up, especially the latter part of the fourth,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “It was a strong finish. But Utah played their butts off. (Jazz coach and former Spurs assistant) Will (Hardy) is doing a heck of a job.”
With the Spurs playing without Devin Vassell (left adductor strain) for the 13th game in a row and big man Luke Kornet (left adductor tightness), Johnson had to dig deep into his bench, giving meaningful minutes to Jordan McLaughlin, Kelly Olynyk and Jeremy Sochan, who missed shootaround due to an illness and was a game-time decision.
Johnson also played Carter Bryant more, and the rookie responded with seven points, four rebounds, one assist and one block in 13 minutes.
“We needed everybody tonight,” Mitch Johnson said. “Jeremy wasn’t feeling well. The box scores says (he had) nothing, but the four minutes he played was huge. We needed minutes from all over the place. It’s that time of the year. We’re a little banged up, a little tired, a little sick. Got to find a way.”
Finding a way sometimes simply boils down to getting the ball to their best players. In the fourth, that meant looking for Fox, whose final 3 was set up by Wembanyama.
“Just as a team, the way we play, the way guys draw attention off of each other, I think that played a part into it,” Fox said of his fourth quarter shooting. “It makes a lot of those shots a lot easier. I got a lot of open 3s today, so that definitely goes into it. And you want to just be able to be in position, be in the right spot.”
From Keldon Johnson’s perspective, Fox is always in the right spot.
“He’s been phenomenal for us,” the forward said. “He’s been a leader, he’s been a big part of what we’re doing and the team wouldn’t be the same without him. So, my hat goes off to him every day. He comes in, doesn’t have no ego, comes in to work. He comes out and gives us his best every night, and that means the world to us.”
