3 takeaways as De’Aaron Fox dominates in Spurs’ win over Blazers

PORTLAND, OREGON - NOVEMBER 26: De’Aaron Fox #4 of the San Antonio Spurs reacts after his three point basket against the Portland Trail Blazers during the second half at Moda Center on November 26, 2025 in Portland, Oregon.
PORTLAND, Ore. — The Spurs are still alive in the NBA Emirates Cup race.
De’Aaron Fox scored 37 points, Devin Vassell chipped in 23 and the Spurs beat the Portland Trail Blazers 115-102 on Wednesday night at the Moda Center.
It was the most points Fox has scored in a Spurs uniform, surpassing the 32 he produced against Dallas last season in his final game before being shut down for pinkie surgery.
The victory kept the Spurs in charge of their own destiny in NBA Cup play. With another triumph Friday at Denver, the Spurs win West Group C — aka “The Group of Death” — and advance to the knockout rounds of the tournament for the first time.
The Nuggets can advance with a victory of their own.
Julian Champagnie added 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Spurs, posting his second consecutive double-double. Keldon Johnson added an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double as well.
The Spurs (12-5) won despite 37 points from guard Deni Avdija, his most with the Trail Blazers.
Here are three takeaways from Wednesday’s win, as the Spurs’ road trip rolls toward the Rocky Mountains:
1. Fox was Fox, but kudos to Devin Vassell
Fox led the Spurs in scoring for the fifth consecutive game since Victor Wembanyama went down with a calf strain.
It helps the Spurs’ cause when a secondary player steps up to chip in to the offensive cause.
On Wednesday, that player was Vassell.

The fifth-year guard matched his season high and registered his second 20-point outing of the season. It was his first since going for 23 in an overtime win at New Orleans in the second game of the season.
After the game, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson looked at a different number in Vassell’s box score — his six rebounds.
“That’s the activity level we need,” Johnson said.
2. Dylan Harper predictably rusty, but that’s OK
Spurs rookie Dylan Harper logged his first action since Nov. 2, when he suffered a left calf strain at Phoenix.
He looked suspiciously like a player who hadn’t seen the floor in 24 days.
The 19-year-old guard saw 17 minutes Wednesday, scoring seven points on 2-of-8 shooting. He also added three offensive rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals to his ledger.
Harper will be better than this as he ramps up his activity level. He has already been better than this before the injury.
For now, the Spurs are glad to have Harper back on the floor and — apparently — no worse for wear.
3. Plucky Blazers mirror coach Tiago Splitter
They say teams often take on the personality of their head coach, and that seems to be happening in Portland.
Tiago Splitter built his reputation with the Spurs a little over a decade ago as a player who is both gritty and heady.
The Trail Blazers are turning into that sort of team.
Left for dead after coach Chauncey Billups was suspended following his arrest on gambling allegations, the Trail Blazers have been competitive under the 40-year-old Splitter.

Even after Wednesday’s defeat, Portland is 8-11 since Splitter took over.
Portland has done it despite being riddled with injuries. Jrue Holiday, Matisse Thybulle and Scoot Henderson were among Wednesday’s inactives.
Splitter won a championship as the starting center on the Spurs’ 2014 squad. The Portland team is unlikely to add to Splitter’s hardware collection, but the Blazers are playing hard and headed in the right direction.
