Against the Pistons, Wembanyama got the Spurs’ night started with a deep 3-pointer on the first possession. Fox dropped in a 3-pointer on the team’s next trip.
That set the course for the remainder of the game.
By the end of the first quarter, Fox had 16 points — already making it his second-best scoring outing in six games.
Johnson said he appreciates the nights when Fox looks to share the wealth.
“I also think there’s certain games where we will need him to do things like (Thursday),” Johnson said.
By halftime Thursday, Wembanyama had 24 points and Fox 22.
It marked the first time the Spurs had two players with 20 points in the same half since Dec. 5, 2018, when DeMar DeRozan and Rudy Gay did it in a loss at the L.A. Lakers.
Wembanyama kept scoring in the second half, threatening to finish with his first 40-point game since Feb. 10. Fox dropped in a few timely second-half shots to turn in his highest-scoring game since Jan 22.
“We have some very dynamic players still figuring out what weapons to use, when to use them and how to utilize them,” Johnson said. (Fox) is the one guy on our team who has done it at an All-Star level and knows exactly how he is going to operate each situation.”
In a sense, Fox is still the guy who dropped 60 points against Minnesota last season while with Sacramento and then came back the next night to pop Utah for 49.
In San Antonio, he doesn’t have to be.
Heading into Friday’s back-to-back finisher against the Los Angeles Clippers, Fox was averaging 18.8 points, his fewest since his sophomore season in Sacramento in 2018-19.
He was also named to last month’s All-Star game as an injury replacement, and is content to serve as a catalyst for a 45-17 Spurs squad that is roaring on all cylinders.
“We have a team of guys that can create their own shot and play extremely well off of advantages,” Fox said. “I came out aggressive (Thursday), but it’s just seeing how games go.”
After last season’s trade, Fox and Wembanyama played only five games together before the 7-foot-4 Frenchman went on the shelf with deep vein thrombosis.
Much of this season to date has been about the Spurs’ two most important pieces learning to jell.
With the Spurs’ first playoff appearance in seven years looming, nights like Thursday — against a fellow championship contender, no less — hint at the promise to come.
“There’s always room to grow,” Fox said, before referencing one of the Western Conference’s most time-tested duos in Denver’s Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic. “It’s a little different than being like Jamal and Jokic and you’ve played seven or eight years together (actually 10). But I think we’re in a great spot.”
Fox’s days of scoring 60 might be over. If the Spurs keep winning as they have, he will be worth every penny — all 22.9 billion of them.
