De’Aaron Fox shakes off early rust in season debut to help Spurs win

De’Aaron Fox celebrated his return from a hamstring injury in typical De’Aaron Fox fashion — with plenty of points and a clutch basket.

The speedy guard scored 24 points on 9 of 14 from the field in his season debut, including a game-clinching basket in the lane with 29.4 seconds left, to help the Spurs to a 126-119 win over New Orleans on Saturday night.

“Fox being Fox,” Spurs guard Devin Vassell said of the 11-foot leaner that gave the Spurs a 124-119 lead. “It’s great to have him back. I mean, what year was he the closer of the year? It showed. It looked like he didn’t miss a beat.”

Fox was named winner of the NBA’s inaugural Jerry West Clutch Player of the Year Award in 2023 while starring with the Sacramento Kings. The Spurs acquired him last February in a blockbuster three-team trade, but his season ended March 12 when he decided to undergo surgery to repair a torn tendon in his left pinky finger. He then suffered a right hamstring injury during the offseason that forced him to miss the preseason and the first eight games of the regular season.

But he was back in action in front of a sellout crowd of 18,611 at the Frost Bank Center eager to shake off a considerable amount of rust.

“Absolutely not,” Fox said when asked if his return was just like riding a bike. “Obviously, there was rust. I played five on five before I got out here, but there’s definitely rust. I haven’t played a game since March and then I actually didn’t play full court all summer. So, my first time really playing full court was two weeks ago.”

Fox started slow, missing his first two shots in the first quarter. The ninth-year pro got his first bucket of the season on a step-back 3 with 9:39 left in the second period that sparked a scintillating run in which he scored 13 straight points in a span of 2½ minutes on 5 of 5 shooting.

Fox capped the run with another 3 that gave the Spurs a 50-34 advantage.

“I’m good at basketball so you can still have rust and be able to do that,” Fox said.

But he saved his best for last, scoring the leaner to secure a win that gave the Spurs a 7-2 record heading into a one-game trip to Chicago for a game against the Bulls on Monday.

“He’s dynamic," Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said of Fox, who also had three assists and three rebounds in 31 minutes. “He’s done it plenty of times. It’s good to have him back on the court. Hopefully, we can just continue to build.”

Fox, who signed a four-year, $229 million maximum extension in August that will keep him with the Spurs through the 2029-30 season, said he went through a down period after he suffered the hamstring injury knowing he could be out for a while.

“I didn’t cry, but I definitely broke down like, ‘Wow, I just got here. Obviously, I just had surgery on my hand and then this happens,’” Fox said. “And for me it was like, ‘All right, you can sit here and pout and not go to work, or you can obviously sulk for a little bit.’ But after that I didn’t miss a day (of rehab).”|
