San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) pulls up for a fall-away jumper over Golden State Warriors guard Will Richard (3) during the second half of an NBA game in San Antonio, Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2025. Castle had 23 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists though Golden State beat San Antonio 123-120.
Stephon Castle and Victor Wembanyama made Spurs history Wednesday night as the first teammates in franchise history to record a triple-double in the same game, but they were in no mood to celebrate after losing 125-120 to Golden State.
“It is surprising with all the history and good players we’ve had here,” Castle said. “It’s definitely something great to be a part of, proud to be part of it. But, yeah, we needed to win to add on to it.”
Castle, who had 23 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in 31 minutes, and Wembanyama, who finished with 31 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists in 36 minutes, also became just the fifth duo in NBA history to record a 20-point triple-double in a game, according to ESPN.
“Those guys are competing,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “They’re doing a lot of good.”
Still, the Spurs became the first team in league history to lose a game in which it had two players record triple-doubles, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Wembanyama picked up his 10th assist on the game’s final play when he completed a long football-type pass on an inbounds play to Castle for a short bank shot with 0.2 seconds left.
“I was thinking about it (getting a triple-double), of course, but I think we did the right decision,” Wembanyama said of the play.
It was Wembanyama’s fourth career triple-double in three seasons and Castle’s first.
“I had a couple games like that last year where I missed it by one, so yeah, obviously we wanted to win, but yeah, happy to get it. Finally,” said Castle, the 2025 NBA Rookie of the Year.
Stephen Curry’s 46 points overshadowed the triple-doubles. In 34 minutes, the future Hall of Famer hit 13 of 25 from the field, including 5 of 16 from deep, and 15 of 16 from the free throw line as Golden State improved to 7-6 on the second night of a back-to-back after losing the night before at Oklahoma City.
Jimmy Butler added 28 points for the Warriors, who hit 32 of 36 free throws, including 24 of 25 in the second half.
The Spurs blew a 16-point second quarter lead to fall to 8-3 for the first time since 2016, snapping a three-game winning streak and suffering their first loss at home in six games.
“It’s tough,” Castle said of facing Curry. “You can’t really relax at all with him, so you really test your mental (stamina) when guarding him.”
Castle did a good job defending Curry in the first quarter, holding him to five points while the Spurs jumped out to a 28-14 lead. But that was before the Spurs’ top perimeter defender got into foul trouble.
“I feel like just picking up those early fouls and having to switch off of him got him going,” Castle said. “And then once you get a player like that going, it is hard to stop him. But it’s always fun to take on those challenges."
Fox fails to find rhythm
Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox’s performance against the Warriors was a far cry from the 24-point adrenaline-fueled effort he turned in Saturday when he made his season debut in a 126-119 win over New Orleans.
Fox scored only 13 points on 5 of 14 from the field and had six turnovers in 36 minutes against Golden State. He suggested afterward his struggles are to be expected after his long recovery from an offseason hamstring injury.
“Getting in shape is one thing, but it’s the rhythm of not playing,” he said.
Johnson pondered whether he may have given Fox too heavy of a workload after he sat out the preseason and the first eight regular season games. After playing 31 minutes against the Pelicans, Fox scored 21 points in 37 minutes in the 121-117 win at Chicago on Monday.
“He’s playing a lot of minutes,” Johnson said. “I probably could have used the bench more. Maybe guys got a little tired.”
Fox believes he just needs time to round into playing shape.
“I don’t think it’ll take him long, but I think he probably deserves a little bit of a runway,” Johnson said.
Lack of communication plagues defense
Fox chalked up the Spurs’ defensive collapse after holding the Warriors to just 14 points in the first quarter to communication breakdowns.
Forcing the up-tempo Spurs to play a halfcourt game, Golden State tallied 35, 43 and 33 in the next three quarters. In the second half, the Warriors connected on 12 of their 28 shots from beyond the arc (42.9%) to finish 21 of 57 (36.8%) for the game.
“When you play against this team, it’s not just effort,” Fox said. “You have to be able to talk to each other.
Wembanyama agreed but also pointed to other issues.
“I guess communication goes into it for sure but also trusting each other, trusting the game plan,” he said.
A rematch is set for Friday. It’s a chance for the Spurs to see if they can make winning adjustments in a playoff-like setting.
“To be able to get the immediate feedback and then try to execute it and put it into real-time living color is something we’re trying to get better at, so it’ll be a good test,” Johnson said.
Friday’s game also marks the second NBA Cup game for each team. The Spurs (1-0) and the Warriors (0-1) are in loaded West Group C.
