De’Aaron Fox ‘dynamic’ in Spurs debut

San Antonio Spurs De’Aaron Fox (4) reacts to play against the Atlanta Hawks during the first half of an NBA basketball game, Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2025, in Atlanta.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Without the benefit of a single practice with his new team or full knowledge of its playbook, De’Aaron Fox pumped in 24 points and dished out 13 assists in his debut outing with the Spurs on Wednesday night.

And Chris Paul just shrugged.

“When you know how to play,” the 39-year-old future Hall of Famer said, “you fit right in.”

Fox’s impressive performance in helping the Spurs down the Hawks 126-125 after surviving a furious comeback bid from a 20-point deficit underscored why general manager Brian Wright jumped at the chance to pursue a deal after Sacramento said it was open to trading the 27-year-old point guard.

“That’s probably about as a complete of a game as you’d hope for in a first game,” acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “We saw the potential. It’s tantalizing. He’s dynamic. He’s going to unlock a whole different element for our team.”

Indeed, Fox said the best is yet to come for him and his young teammates after the Spurs acquired him in a blockbuster three-team trade completed Monday.

Game 2 of the Fox era is Friday against the Hornets.

“When you have guys able to get downhill, create their own shot and also create for others, it makes the game so much easier,” Fox said of all young talent he has to work with. “And then all of us are athletic and long, where we’re able to get to the rim. And like I said, man, that’s why I think this group could be special.”

The play that led to Wembanyama hitting what turned out to be the game-clinching free throw underscored how special the Fox-Wembanyama combination can be.

After Trae Young’s drive tied the game, 125-125, with 8.5 seconds left, Johnson designed a play during a timeout that gave Fox complete control after Paul’s inbounds pass. Drawing a double-team, Fox executed a perfect high pick-and-roll with Wembanyama that allowed the 21-year-old Frenchman to slice through the paint for a dunk attempt.

Fouled at the rim by Onyeka Okongwu, Wembanyama sank the first free throw with 2.9 seconds left. Following an order from Johnson, he intentionally missed the second one to deny Atlanta the chance for an inbounds play.

Young’s 44-foot 3-point heave misfired, giving the Spurs (22-26) the win in a game they desperately wanted because they own Atlanta’s unprotected 2025 first-round pick through the 2022 Dejounte Murray trade.

“Great play drawn by Mitch,” Wembanyama said.

Fox said he knew he would draw a double-team, which would open things up for Wembanyama.

“Regardless of how well I’m playing in a game, I draw attention, and that’s what happened,” Fox said. "They put two on me, whether it was a miscommunication or that’s what they wanted to do, and (Wembanyama) rolled and tried to finish strong and got fouled.

“It’s funny, I told him in the time out, you had better not kick that ball out. We live or die by what you decide to do, but we definitely live or die by you taking that shot. You go to the basket strong, you get rewarded.”

But it all started with Johnson’s decision to put the ball in Fox’s hands.

“The goal of any offense, probably no matter how you slice, is trying to gain an advantage when you have someone that can gain an advantage just with the basketball in their hands,” Johnson said. "It’s a heck of an advantage, and he’s one of the players in this league that can do that.

Wembanyama finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds for his 23rd double-double of the season. He also had a block to give him a streak of 81 straight games with rejection, which is tied for the sixth longest streak in NBA history.

Fox’s 13 assists matched his season high and were the most ever in a Spur debut. In a team-high 37 minutes, he also had three steals and hit 11 of 22 from the field, with his first field goal coming on a pull-up 3 with 7:34 left in the first quarter on a feed from Paul.

“When I came in, everybody told me to be myself, not to come in and just try to fit in, but the way that I play, I feel like I’m unselfish," Fox said of his 13 assists.

Devin Vassell chipped in 20 points on 9-for-18 from the floor. Paul had 11 points, including two 3-pointers in the final 6:12, to go along with nine assists and Jeremy Sochan came off the bench for 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting.

Young finished with 32 points for the Hawks (23-28). Okongwu had a season-best 30 points and 12 rebounds, and De’Andre Hunter finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Despite Fox going through only a shootaround with his new team, Johnson didn’t hesitate to move him into the starting lineup and give him a heavy workload.

“We are going to let him do his thing,” Johnson said before the game.

With Fox starting, Stephon Castle returned to the bench. As expected, the standout rookie accepted the move without complaint.

“I want him to just play his game, play confident,” Castle, who had 11 points in 20 minutes, said of Fox. “We really kind of play off him a little bit. He was being aggressive, making the right reads, taking care of the ball, defending. He had a great game.”

And plenty more should come, especially once he and Wembanyama gain more chemistry as pick-and-roll partners.

“It’ll take some time,” Johnson said. "I don’t think it’ll be clunky because their skill sets are complementary, but I do think there’s a feeling out process, which we understand and will be patient with.

“(Fox) has been an elite player for a while. He’s played for a few different coaches. He’s played with a few different high-level players in terms of, I guess, you call running mates. He played with (Tyrese) Haliburton, another handler. He’s played with DeMar (DeRozan). He’s played with (Domantas) Sabonis. I think him and Victor will find the rhythm again.”

Like Paul, Wembanyama said Fox’s play wasn’t a surprise.

“We all enjoyed it,” the 7-foot-3 center said. “He just brings a lot to the table for us.”

Said Paul, “The pace (Fox) plays with, the space we have out there on the court, (it’s impressive). He’s played with some really good centers, but I don’t think anybody like Vic that can open the court up like he can. And we ain’t even had a practice with him other than shootaround today. So, we are going to learn and figure it out as we go.”
