San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox (4) brings the ball up court against New Orleans Pelicans forward Micah Peavy (14) during the second half of an NBA game in San Antonio, Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025. The Spurs beat the Pelicans 126-119.
CHICAGO – After watching the Spurs get off to one of the best starts in franchise history without him, De’Aaron Fox headed into his season debut Saturday against New Orleans with one primary goal in mind.
Just don’t screw it up.
“I don’t want to break their rhythm, because I feel like we’ve played well,” the All-Star guard said. “So for me it was just go out there and try to help the team keep winning.”
With that as the barometer, Fox’s long-awaited return to the Spurs’ lineup was an unmitigated success.
Playing in his first NBA game since March 12, Fox spearheaded a 126-119 victory over the Pelicans by scoring a team-high 24 points, including a game-sealing floater with 29.4 seconds remaining.
“It was Fox being Fox,” guard Devin Vassell said. “It looked like he didn’t miss a beat.”
Fox and the Spurs (7-2) will hope the winning beat goes on as they travel to Chicago for Monday’s game against the upstart Bulls at the United Center.
It has been an eventful eight months for Fox, who the Spurs obtained in a blockbuster swap with Sacramento at last season’s February trade deadline.
The 27-year-old played 17 games with the Spurs before being shut down in March to undergo the first surgery of his life – a procedure to repair a damaged ligament in the pinkie finger of his left (shooting) hand.
Having successfully recovered from that, Fox strained his right hamstring during an offseason workout in August. That injury is the one that nudged Fox’s season debut into November.
In between, Fox signed a Spurs-record four-year, $229-million contract extension to lock himself in as Victor Wembanyama’s running mate for the near future.
Upon learning his hamstring diagnoses would likely postpone the start of his second season in San Antonio, Fox was close to distraught.
“I didn’t cry,” said Fox, who had never had a hamstring issue before. “But I definitely broke down. Like wow, I just got here. I just had surgery on my hand and then this happens.”
The rehab process was rigorous. Fox eschewed a vacation and pulled out of a promotional trip to China for his shoe brand to work on recovery.
“I didn’t miss a day,” Fox said.
The waiting was hard on Fox.
He arrived for the start of training camp convinced he was healthy and clamoring to play. Before the first practice, the Spurs athletic performance staff clocked Fox at 15 mph on a sprint.
Still, the medical staff barred him from fully participating in practices or games when the preseason began.
Fighting impatience, Fox understood and even appreciated the Spurs’ caution with him.
“As a competitor, obviously I wanted to get out there but I’m listening to them,” Fox said. “They have the best interest for me. I signed a contract to be here long term, so they want to protect the asset and make sure the asset is ready when I’m out there.”
It was only two weeks ago that Fox resumed playing in full-court 5-on-5 scrimmages for the first time since March.
Given that layoff, Fox eased his way into things against the Pelicans, going scoreless in the first quarter while attempting only two shots in 7 ½ minutes.
Then, the second quarter began and Fox became Fox again.
Fox poured in 15 points in the frame, including 13 in a row at one point.
“He just got rolling and he got rolling fast,” Vassell said. “I mean it went from, ‘Is he going to make one?’ and next thing you know it’s pow, pow, pow.”
Fox acknowledges he began the day with rust to shake off. Even so, he was not shocked by his second-quarter surge.
“I’m good at basketball,” Fox said with a grin, “so you can still have rust and be able to do that.”
Fox’s third basket of the game came when he took an inbounds pass at one end of the floor, raced 70 feet through all five Pelicans players and completed a short jumper in the paint.
That was the moment Fox’s teammates knew the fastest player in the NBA was all the way back.
“We’ve definitely seen something like that before,” said forward Harrison Barnes, who played six seasons alongside Fox in Sacramento before rejoining forces with the Spurs.
With the game in the balance late in the fourth, Fox struck again.
A one-time NBA Clutch Player of the Year, Fox slipped by New Orleans rookie Jeremiah Fears for a short leaner that gave the Spurs a five-point edge with a little less than 30 seconds to play.
“He’s dynamic,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “He’s done it plenty of times in his career. It’s good to have him back on the court and hopefully we can just continue to build.”
There will be wrinkles to iron out to be sure.
Saturday’s game was only the sixth Fox has played with Wembanyama. It was the first time he shared the starting lineup with backcourt mate Stephon Castle, a partnership that will be equally interesting to monitor going forward.
Castle equaled a career high with 14 assists Saturday. Meanwhile, 22 of Fox’s 24 points came with Castle off the floor.
Despite the rust, despite the kinks, Fox accomplished his predominant goal in his season debut.
He didn’t screw anything up.
The Spurs are looking forward to more of Fox not screwing things up to come.
“We’ve been waiting for Fox to get back really all summer,” Castle said. “It’s only going to help us from here.”
