3 takeaways as Spurs win in De’Aaron Fox’s return

San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox (4) drives into the lane on guard Jose Alvarado (15) during the second half of an NBA game in San Antonio, Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025. Fox, playing in his first game of the year, led the Spurs with 24 point to help them beat the Pelicans 126-119.

Welcome back, De’Aaron Fox.

After an overly long and injury plagued offseason, the Spurs’ All-Star guard made his season debut Saturday.

It went about as well as the Spurs could have hoped, with Fox scooting for 24 points in a 126-119 victory over New Orleans at the Frost Bank Center.

A one-time NBA Clutch Player of the Year, Fox provided the game’s most crucial basket, wiggling around the Pelicans’ Jeremiah Fears for a basket with 29.4 seconds to go that helped the Spurs secure the game.

It marked Fox’s first NBA action since March 12 of last season, after which he underwent surgery to repair a ligament in his left pinkie. A subsequent hamstring strain suffered in August pushed Fox’s season opener to Saturday.

Victor Wembanyama added 18 points, 18 rebounds and three blocks, as the Spurs placed eight players in double figures. Stephon Castle chipped in 14 points and equaled a career high with 14 assists.

The Spurs won their second in a row to improve to 7-2, having defeated Houston a night earlier.

New Orleans dropped to 2-7 despite 41 points from Trey Murphy III, which matched a career best.

The Pelicans, who came in already with the worst record in the Western Conference, were hampered by the absence of a handful of rotation players including All-Star forward Zion Williamson.

Here are three takeaways from Saturday’s victory in Fox’s long-awaited return:

1. The Fox/Castle combo flashes its promise

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson started both Fox and Stephon Castle together, but from there staggered their minutes throughout the game.

There were times when both were on the floor at the same time, but there was no time in which the Spurs were without at least one of their lead guards.

Fox did the bulk of his scoring in the minutes he played without Castle, notching 22 of his 24 during those minutes.

After going scoreless in the first quarter as he eased his way into the action, Fox exploded for the Spurs’ first 13 points of the second quarter, and 15 of the first 17.

All of them came while Castle took a breather.

Fox was especially useful to have around at the end of the game, after Castle fouled out with 1:37 to play.

Fox finished the game with the Spurs’ final four points to keep the Pelicans at bay.

2. Julian Champagnie the odd starter out

Due to pesky NBA rules that disallow teams from playing with six players at once, Fox’s return meant somebody who started the previous eight games would have to move to the bench to make room for the All-Star guard.

That somebody turned out to be Julian Champagnie.

The 24-year-old forward was coming off his best performance of the season against Houston, with 22 points on a career-high-tying six 3-pointers with a career-best four steals.

Champagnie was predominantly a bench player for the Spurs last season, with the coaches expecting his return to that role to be seamless.

The trick for the Spurs’ new starting unit will be to make up for the length, defensive activity and outside shooting Champagnie brought to that group.

He contributed 14 points Saturday to lead all Spurs reserves.

3. Castle ringleads the assist parade, again

Even with Fox back, Castle had the ball in his hands often Saturday.

He finished with an assist number that matched his career high, a game after handing out 13 assists in the Spurs’ victory over Houston.

With or without Fox, 27 assists in a 24-hour span is a big number for Castle.

Sparked by Castle’s playmaking, the Spurs set season bests in team assists on back-to-back nights, totaling 30 against the Rockets and 31 against New Orleans.
