At long last, De’Aaron Fox set for season debut against Pelicans

San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox works out before the home game against the Miami Heat at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Oct. 30, 2025. Fox is still out due to injury.
On Friday morning, Spurs point guard De’Aaron Fox followed what has become a familiar game-day routine for him.
He dressed out for morning shootaround, participated in all the drills, got some extra shots up at the end of the session and, for the eighth time in eight games this season, was ruled out for that night’s contest with a left hamstring strain.
At last, that worn-out tune is set to change.
A few hours after Friday’s walkthrough, the Spurs confirmed Fox will make his season debut when the Spurs finish a back-to-back at the Frost Bank Center with a game against New Orleans on Saturday.
“It’s crazy,” Fox said in the locker room before Friday’s contest. “It feels like it’s been forever.”
Fox’s teammates, meanwhile, can hardly wait to welcome him back.
“We miss him,” Spurs forward Keldon Johnson said. “He’s going to be the engine for us. He’s going to get us going.”
The one-time All-Star played in 17 games with the Spurs after arriving from Sacramento at last season’s trade deadline, averaging 19.7 points. He was shut down in March to undergo surgery on a torn pinkie finger on his left (shooting) hand.
The medical woes continued in August, when Fox suffered a hamstring strain during an offseason workout.
On the eve of training camp in late September, the 27-year-old Fox said he felt well enough to play right then.
“I think I’m ready, but I don’t have that expertise,” Fox said at the time. “We go off of how I feel and feel like I can go out there and play right now.”
Hoping to avoid any hint of a setback, the Spurs’ medical staff instead kept Fox off the floor for the duration of training camp and the preseason. He spent the first seven games of the regular season in street clothes, a trend he was set to repeat Friday against Houston.
Is Fox getting excited to make his long-awaited season debut?
“Definitely,” he said. “But I’m going to keep my emotions in check.”
Fox’s impending return comes on the heels of injury comebacks from Jeremy Sochan, Kelly Olynyk and Lindy Waters III, each of whom made their season debuts in Wednesday’s 118-116 loss at the L.A. Lakers.
After Fox, backup center Luke Kornet (ankle) should be the next Spur to find his way off the injured list. At that point — knock on wood — only rookie guard Dylan Harper (left calf strain) would remain on the injury report.
“We’re getting our guys back slowly but surely,” said Keldon Johnson, whose team started the season 5-2 heading into Friday. “It’s going to be scary once we get everybody back.”

De’Aaron Fox of the San Antonio Spurs poses for the media at San Antonio Spurs Media Day at Victory Capital Performance Center on September 29, 2025 in San Antonio.
Fox’s return to the lineup for the first time since March 12 will produce effects that reverberate up and down the roster, from the Spurs’ tallest player (the 7-foot-4 Victor Wembanyama) to the shortest (6-foot backup guard Jordan McLaughlin).
For Wembanyama, the presence of another scoring threat and ace pick-and-roll ball-handler on the floor should take a bit of the offensive load off his plate.
For McLaughlin, it should mean fewer minutes as he returns to his role as a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency deep reserve.
For somebody in the Spurs’ starting lineup — possibly swingman Julian Champagnie — it will mean a move to the bench.
No player on the Spurs’ roster stands to benefit more from Fox’s return than Stephon Castle, who has been miscast as the team’s primary ball-handler by default to open the season.
Last year’s NBA Rookie of the Year, Castle is off to a fine start as the team’s starting point guard, averaging 19.7 points and a team-best 5.7 assists to open his sophomore campaign.
On the downside, Castle entered Friday leading the entire NBA in turnovers at five per game.
He added six more in Wednesday’s narrow defeat in Los Angeles.
“Obviously six turnovers is too much, and he agrees with that,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “And there’s times where whether we’re on a run or it’s a certain point in the game, some of the turnovers are just inappropriate and unacceptable.”
Castle blamed his turnover troubles mostly on bad reads.
“I just need to be able to balance it, read the defense,” Castle said of running the offense without being sloppy. “There were a couple of things I saw that were just bad reads … Just need to watch more film on it, and especially late in the game, just make a simple play.”
With Fox set to come back, Castle can slide to his more natural role as a secondary ball-handler and creator off the ball.
He started 47 games next to Chris Paul in that capacity last season on his way to winning Rookie of the Year honors.
Once the Spurs have all three of their prized guards in uniform — Fox, Castle and Harper — the real fun begins for Mitch Johnson and the coaching staff.
“All of them are different,” Keldon Johnson said. “There’s no one like Fox. There’s no one like Steph. There’s no one like Dylan. They bring so many different things to the game.”
The next step in the process comes Saturday, when Fox will break his game-day routine and actually play in a game.
