Spurs point guard De’Aaron Fox doesn’t think he will be cleared by the team’s medical staff in time to play in the regular season opener Oct. 22 at Dallas after he suffered a right hamstring injury in the offseason.
“I think I’m ready, but I don’t have that expertise,” Fox said at media day Monday.
Fox said he also does not expect to play in the preseason.
“I had never had a hamstring injury, so I didn’t know what I was supposed to feel like,” he said. “But like I said, right now I feel great. But, yeah, I don’t think I’ll be playing opening night. I definitely won’t be playing in the preseason, that’s for sure.”
The Spurs open training camp Tuesday. Their preseason opener is set for Oct. 6 against a team from China at the Frost Bank Center.
“We’re just going to be very mindful and conservative as we always are,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said, referring to Fox’s availability. “He will be out there ready to be practicing tomorrow, but we’ll be big picture. Obviously, long season ahead.”
While the hamstring is an issue, Fox is fully healed from offseason surgery to repair tendon damage in his left pinkie. The injury limited him to just 17 games with the Spurs after they acquired the one-time All-Star from Sacramento in a three-team trade on Feb. 3.
“The hand is no issue,” said Fox, who averaged 19.7 points, 6.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals for the Spurs last season.
The Spurs could also be without rookie Dylan Harper in the preseason after he had surgery in early September to repair a partially torn collateral ligament in his left thumb, although the 19-year-old guard said he “definitely believes” he could play in the preseason.
“I feel good,” the left-handed Harper said. “I think rehab has been going very well."
But Johnson said there is no timetable for Harper’s return. The No. 2 overall pick in the June draft suffered the injury in an offseason workout and has been fitted with a protective plastic splint.
“Everything is heading in the right direction, so we just want it to continue that way,” Johnson said.
Said Harper, “I’d rather have to sit out now than have to sit out during the year where we’ll be playing games, got to win games.”
With Fox and Harper sidelined, Stephon Castle likely will see plenty of time at point guard in the preseason.
“He’s built for it has already shown the chops to do it and had success with it,” Johnson said of the versatility displayed by the 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year.
Forward Jeremy Sochan’s preseason status is also uncertain after he sustained a left calf injury in the offseason.
“It’s not too bad. I feel good,” Sochan said.
Said Johnson, “All those guys are just getting better and better every day and improving and want to push it, but obviously we will not, as we have traditionally done here.”
Fox, Spurs pleased with extension
Fox said his confidence is soaring after the Spurs gave him a four-year, $229 million maximum contract extension in the offseason.
The deal secured Fox’s future with the club through the 2029-30 season.
“It’s always great knowing you are in a system that has a belief in you,” he said. “It definitely gives you confidence to go out there and play your hardest and play to your full potential.”
Spurs general manager Brian Wright said he was excited to extend Fox knowing he is “fully committed” to the team’s future.
“He’s been a great player for a long time,” Wright said of the 27-year-old New Orleans native who grew up in Houston. “He’s not a young player who is unknown.”
Wright was non-committal when asked about other players eligible for extensions, including Sochan.
“We’ll see,” Wright said. “You’ve got to walk those things out day by day and we’re trying to build a team now and see how all the pieces fit, so we’ll see how that comes together.”
Johnson praises new assistants
Johnson expressed confidence that recently hired assistant coaches Sean Sweeney and Corliss Williamson will fit in nicely to the Spurs’ way of doings.
“We felt really good about the people that we brought in,” Johnson said. “We feel they are our type of people and about the right stuff.”
The Spurs are counting on the defensive-minded Sweeney to bolster their play on that end of the court.
Sweeney joined the Spurs as associate head coach following four seasons as an assistant coach with Dallas. Before working for the Mavericks, he spent three seasons as an assistant with Detroit from 2018-21 following a four-year stint with Milwaukee in the same role from 2014-18.
Fox said Sweeney’s defensive “philosophies” have always been tough to play against.
“I’ve had good games against Sean, but the way he teaches it definitely makes it tough on a ball handler on a guy who likes to get downhill,” Fox said.
