How Julian Champagnie went from goat to hero in 48 hours

San Antonio Spurs forward Julian Champagnie (30) drives past Houston Rockets forward Jabari Smith Jr. (10) during the second half of an NBA game in San Antonio, Friday, Nov. 7, 2025. San Antonio beat Houston 121-110.
Julian Champagnie let the feeling linger. He didn’t have a choice.
It followed him from the locker room at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, to the bus that carried the Spurs to the airport, to the flight back to San Antonio and into his nightmares when he finally closed his eyes Thursday night.
Champagnie missed two free throws with 0.2 seconds left against the Lakers on Wednesday, which would have forced overtime in the Spurs’ 118-116 loss.
The disappointment haunted him all the way back home.
“That won’t happen again,” Champagnie vowed.
When did Champagnie at last emerge from his cocoon of self-flagellation?
“About 4 o’clock (Friday),” Champagnie said.
By the time Friday ended, the haunting was officially over for Champagnie.
His 22 points and six 3-pointers proved crucial in the Spurs’ most impressive win to date, a rugged 121-110 victory over Houston in NBA Emirates Cup play.
In doing so, Champagnie discovered the best way to cleanse his palate after a low moment in Los Angeles was to set the nets ablaze at the Frost Bank Center.
“It has to be a short memory,” said Champagnie, a 24-year-old small forward. “Just on to the next one. I was just out here telling myself that one (the defeat in L.A.) is over and it’s a new game.”
In the span of 48 hours, Champagnie went from a goat in Los Angeles to a hero against Houston.
Champagnie’s six 3-pointers against Houston matched a career high. His career-best four steals bore testament to his high activity level in the midst of a Spurs’ defense that squelched the Rockets down the stretch.
For good measure, Champagnie added a key offensive rebound late that allowed the Spurs to milk clock as they were working to bleed out the game.
“I had no doubt that he would bounce back,” forward Keldon Johnson said. “Once the game was over (in Los Angeles), we put it behind us. It was nothing we could change. Just to see him put it past him, it shows so much growth.”
Champagnie has indeed come a long way since the Spurs rescued him from the waiver-wire scrap heap, two days after the Philadelphia 76ers jettisoned him on Valentine’s Day in 2023.
He arrived in San Antonio with realistic expectations.
“I was just hoping not to get cut again,” Champagnie said.
Champagnie signed a two-year deal to return to the club that summer that paid $3 million per season, which today makes him one of the best bang-for-the-buck values in the NBA.
In June of 2023, the Spurs drafted Victor Wembanyama, kicking their ongoing rebuilding project into overdrive.
Champagnie soon found himself in the thick of it.
When Champagnie, a career 84.4% free-throw shooter, went to the foul line with a chance to send Wednesday’s game against the Lakers into OT, his fellow Spurs believed the outcome to be inevitable.
“We have all the confidence in the world in Julian,” said forward Harrison Barnes, who also made six 3-pointers on his way to a season-high 24 points against the Rockets. “There’s no one else we would have wanted on the floor to shoot those shots.”
Champagnie’s first attempt rimmed out, which compelled him to miss the second intentionally so the Spurs could try a game-tying tip-in.
That didn’t work out, either, and the Spurs returned from a disappointing road trip to Phoenix and Los Angeles empty-handed.
Champagnie kicked himself all the way from L.A. to San Antonio.
“I wanted to win the game,” Champagnie said. “I wish that I would’ve made those free throws.”
When Champagnie arrived for work on Friday morning, however, his fellow Spurs believed something else to be inevitable.
Champagnie would shake it off and be ready to go.
“I never had any doubt,” Wembanyama said. “I’ve seen him. I’ve worked alongside him for months. I’ve seen how he works and what he can do shooting-wise, so I had zero doubt.”
What comes next for Champagnie is a bit up in the air.
With All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox slated to make his season debut Saturday against New Orleans, somebody from the Spurs’ starting lineup will have to shift to the bench.
There is a good chance Champagnie becomes the odd man out.
Having put together quite a redemption game against Houston, however, Champagnie figured he could let this feeling linger, too.
After all, he had earned the moment.
“To see him come out here and hit shots and really when we needed him, I’m happy for him,” Johnson said. “I feel like he deserves it.”
