Spurs love Bismack Biyombo’s energy and attitude off the bench

San Antonio Spurs center Bismack Biyombo cheers on his teammates during the first half against the Toronto Raptors at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Sunday, April 13, 2025.
Bismack Biyombo did not have to be here.
He could have been on a beach somewhere — either in his adopted U.S. hometown of Miami or a more exotic — with a mai tai in one hand and sand in his toes, enjoying the fruits of an NBA life well lived.
Instead, the 33-year-old Spurs big man found himself on the floor at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indiana late into the fourth quarter Monday night, shepherding a group of greenhorn players ticketed for the G League through the final horn of a a mostly meaningless 124-108 preseason victory over the Pacers.
In that moment, there was no place else Biyombo would rather have been.
“It’s a great group of young guys just to be around and help them out,” Biymobo said. “I think when you enjoy doing what you do, then you can’t call it work. And I enjoy working with good people.”
It did not take the 6-foot-8 Biymobo long to entrench himself in the Spurs’ locker room upon his arrival eight months ago.
The 14-year NBA veteran joined the Spurs on a 10-day contract in February and eventually signed on for the remainder of the season.
Last month, the Spurs re-signed Biyombo to a one-year minimum contract worth $3.6 million to stick around.
That came as welcome news for Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, who views the 6-foot-8 Biyombo as the type of experienced voice growing teams need in a locker room.
“He’s the definition of a professional in how you want to act and operate,” Johnson said. “And I hope our guys are watching and listening every time he does something.”
A native of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Biyombo’s career has traversed the NBA map. The No. 7 pick in the 2011 draft, Biyombo began his career in Charlotte before hopscotching to Toronto, Orlando, back to Charlotte, then Phoenix, Memphis, Oklahoma City and San Antonio.
His role is likely to change slightly in his second tour of duty with the Spurs.
Biyombo was jobless last February when the Spurs came calling in search of break-glass-in-case-of-emergency depth behind Victor Wembanyama, after Zach Collins was shipped to Chicago at the trade deadline.
Eleven days after Biyombo signed his first 10-day contract, Wembanyama was pronounced out for the season with deep vein thrombosis.
That diagnosis elevated Biyombo into the Spurs’ nightly rotation. He started 26 games, his most for a single team in the same season since 2020-21 in Charlotte.
In that time, the Spurs staff fell in love with Biyombo — and not necessarily for the 5.0 points and 5.6 rebounds he averaged.
“He is always ready,” Johnson said. “He talks to his teammates and understands every minute in the gym is important.”
If all goes to plan for the Spurs this season, less and less of Biymobo’s contributions are likely to come on the floor.
Wembanyama is back from his blood clot issue, ready to resume the heady work of taking the NBA by storm.
The Spurs spent the bulk of their offseason free-agent budget on the 7-1 Luke Kornet, who will serve as Wembanyama’s top backup and occasional running mate.
For good measure, the club also acquired another backup big man, the 6-11 Kelly Olynyk, in a trade with Washington.
Nudged down the depth chart, Biyombo’s primary on-court role for now seems to be to help the Spurs finish off preseason contests after the team’s regulars have called it a night.
“He is very selfless,” forward Julian Champagnie said. “He goes on the floor with those young guys and teaches them. He’s directing traffic. Stuff like that’s really valuable.”
It is not an understatement to say Biyombo has been a big part of the Spurs’ 4-0 start to the preseason, when games are often decided by how well a team’s deep bench players can hold up in the fourth quarter.

Down the stretch against Indiana, Biyombo shared the floor with one other guaranteed NBA player — shooting guard Lindy Waters III. The remainder of the Spurs’ fourth-quarter rotation included once and future G Leaguers David Jones Garcia, Stanley Umude and Harrison Ingram, and sometimes Micah Potter, Riley Minix and rookie Carter Bryant.
At one point late in last week’s overtime win over Utah, Biyombo found himself fighting possession-by-possession in a tight game alongside Minix, Ingram, Umude and Adam Flagler.
Through it all, Biyombo was the anchor at the center of the Fountain of Youth — talking and chattering and pointing and communicating instructions.
“That end of that fourth quarter into overtime is a ton of impressions and experience for those young guys,” Johnson said. “For someone of (Biyombo’s) experience to be able to help and be a part of that is invaluable for your program.”
Indeed, Biyombo does not view fourth-quarter mop up duty to be beneath him. Rather, he views it as his job.
Even if he wouldn’t call it work.
“When I look at the group of young guys we have, they’re hungry,” Biyombo said. “They want to get better, they want to improve, they want to win. With the way we are working, the pace we’re going at, we’ve all got to feel good about it.”
