When Bismack Biyombo signed his first 10-day contract with the Spurs on Feb. 9, he arrived with little expectation about what life with his new team might hold.
One thing the veteran big man thought he knew for certain: He was not being signed to be the team’s starting center.
“Not at all,” Biyombo said.
Not so fast.
With All-Star center Victor Wembanyama since ruled out for the season with a blood clot issue and top backup Charles Bassey on the injured list with a knee problem, the 32-year-old Biyombo took the express elevator to the top of the Spurs’ depth chart.
The 32-year-old journeyman performed well enough to earn a second 10-day contract, which Biyombo eventually parlayed into a deal for the remainder of the season signed Monday.
Biyombo is aware Wembanyama’s condition played a role in extending his time in San Antonio.
“You never want to see a player go down like that,” Biyombo said. “As you get to know Vic, he’s such a good, humble kid. But now that we’re here, we have to get the job done.”
Heading into Tuesday’s home game against Brooklyn, Biyombo had logged eight appearances with the Spurs, starting all seven contests after the All-Star break.
As a starter, the 6-foot-8 Biyombo is averaging six points, 5.3 rebounds and one block per game.
They are not All-Star numbers by any means, but also not bad for a guy who six weeks ago was sitting on his couch in Miami, assuming his NBA career might be over.
Spurs players applauded the decision to stick with the player they call “Biz” for the remainder of the season.
“He’s been around for a long time now,” swingman Julian Champagnie said. “He knows what it takes to win games. He goes into the game with a different perspective.”
Biyombo did not sign with a new team last summer after spending the 2023-24 campaign with Memphis and Oklahoma City. At the time the Spurs called inquiring about his services last month, Biyombo had not watched a single NBA game this season.
“When I knew I was going to sign with the team, the first game I watched was the Atlanta game,” Biyombo said, referring to the Spurs’ 126-125 victory over the Hawks on Feb. 5.
The circumstances around Biyombo’s arrival underscores the Spurs’ desperation for frontcourt depth even before Wembanyama’s season ended.
“It was a crazy decision to being in a guy that you have not seen play in five months,” Biyombo acknowledged. “They took a chance, and I’m beyond grateful.”
A 14-year veteran who has played for seven teams, Biyombo has seen a bit of everything during his time in the NBA. He has proven to be a trusted voice during a time in which so much seems in flux for the Spurs
During Biyombo’s time with the team, the Spurs have lost Wembanyama, added De’Aaron Fox via trade and welcomed an emotional team meeting with coach Gregg Popovich, who has been away from the club since suffering a stroke in early November.
“In situations like this, sometimes you have to be a listener more than a talker,” Biyombo said. “Uncertainty is part of this league – a lot of trades, a lot of people being waived. This is the world we live in. Being around for so long helps you understand how you can help around these things.”
Champagnie befuddled by first career ejection

Until Sunday, Champagnie had been a model citizen during his basketball career, never picking up so much as a single technical foul.
So it came as a shock to be ejected from the Spurs’ 146-132 loss against Oklahoma City, along with the Thunder’s Lu Dort and Kenrich Williams.
The incident leading to the heave-ho began late in the third quarter, when Williams took offense to Champagnie catching him with an inadvertent elbow while attempting a pass.
“I elbowed him by accident,” Champagnie said Tuesday. “He took it personal. That’s not my problem.”
As Williams challenged Champangie, a scuffle near midcourt ensued with Dort and Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan seizing each other by the jerseys in the thick of the fray.
Upon replay review, game officials tossed Champagnie, Dort and Williams from the contest. Sochan was issued a technical foul but allowed to remain in the game.
Champagnie does not believe justice was served.
“I don’t think anybody should have been ejected,” Champagnie said. “I think they should have let us keep playing.”
Typically regarded as an NBA Boy Scout, Champagnie remained nonplussed about the episode two days later.
“I don’t usually get into stuff like that,” Champagnie said. “It’s not usually my thing. It will make the matchup a little more interesting when we play them again.”
