3 Takeaways as Wembanyama, Spurs remain undefeated in preseason

INDIANAPOLIS – Spurs rookie guard Dylan Harper has shared the court with Victor Wembanyama for all of two preseason games.
That is long enough to understand what he is watching is special.
“I went from playing with some pretty solid big men (at Rutgers),” Harper said, “to playing with a (7-4) guy who can do anything. He looks like a point guard sometimes.”
That was the opinion of a 19-year-old new to the NBA, after Wembanyama scored 27 points with 11 rebounds and three steals in 25 minutes to lead the Spurs to a 124-108 preseason victory over Indiana at Gainbridge FieldHouse
It also happens to be the opinion of one of the league’s winningest active coaches.
“I just don’t ever recall someone who has so much influence on both ends of the floor,” Pacers coach Rick Carlise said.
Wembanyama was dominant again in his longest outing of the exhibition season, as the Spurs extended their preseason record to 4-0.
The only blemish in Wembanyama’s night were seven turnovers, which have been a consistent bugaboo so far.
Stephon Castle scored 14 points in his preseason debut after missing the first three contests with a knee contusion.
Luke Kornet added 16 points and seven rebounds to lead a list of three double-digit scorers off the bench. Harper had 11 points and led the Spurs with eight assists.
The Pacers were missing the two most important players off last season’s team that advanced to Game 7 of the NBA Finals, with Tyrese Haliburton on the mend from an Achilles tendon tear suffered in the aforementioned Game 7 and Myles Turner now a member of the Milwaukee Bucks.
Still, the scrappy, Carlise-led Pacers got 31 points from Bennedict Mathurin and gave the Spurs a welcome preseason test.
“Indiana pushes the pace on both ends,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “They’re in phenomenal shape. It’s a really good barometer for us in that aspect. I thought our guys fought through it.”
Here are three takeaways from a solid win Monday in Indiana:
1. Castle was Castle, pretty much
Last year’s NBA Rookie of the Year had little trouble sliding back into the lineup after coming back from his minor knee injury.
Castle started a point guard, a spot he is likely to occupy on opening night with De’Aaron Fox still working his way back from a hamstring strain.
He played a bit more than 19 minutes, knocked down a 3-pointer in his first shot attempt, and in general looked like the same player he was last season.
“It took me a second to get going,” Castle said. “That first stint I was a little tired. I got used to it pretty quick.”
Castle finished 5 of 12 from the field, had three steals and four assists and found his way to the foul line five times. He only made two of those free-throws, leaving points on the table.
Perhaps most importantly, Castle shared the court in stretches with Harper. It is a combination the Spurs would like to see more of as the season progresses.
“The first stint he was out there, you could see the difference,” Harper said. “Just the full-court pressure to speed them up.”
2. Yes, Wemby’s turnovers are a concern
After watching Wembanyama toy with other grown-men professional basketball players again Monday, it seems persnickety to nitpick another high turnover game.
Kind of like harping on the one missed brush stroke on the Mona Lisa.
But here we go.
Wembanyama has totaled 19 of them over four games, or an average of nearly 4.8 per contest.
That number could be higher. Monday marked the first time this preseason he had played past the third quarter.
Johnson isn’t letting that number slide.
“It’s definitely something we want to keep down, both he individually and us as a team,” Johnson said. “There’s a little bit of it’s the preseason, of him trying different things and different combinations.”
Some of Wembanyama’s turnovers in Indiana were the product of him being a little loose handling the ball in traffic. One came when he tried an ill-advised behind-the-back pass that didn’t go as intended. Some were just dumb bad luck.
“(Making) fundamentally sound plays, especially with the basketball, taking care of it, we will insist that. Especially for someone like him who is who is going to have high usage and be put in so many different spots with the ball.”
This much should go without saying: The Spurs aren’t taking the ball out of Wembanyama’s hands anytime soon, turnovers or no.
“I think Victor in transition and half court, he’s going to have the ball in so many spots he’s going to affect the game with the attention he draws,” Johnson said. “For him to make plays with his teammates is really, really important. He’ll have chances to do that.”
3. Do these wins matter even one little bit?
After the Spurs improved to 4-0 in the preseason for the first time since 2001-2002, your intrepid beat writer sought out the team’s oldest player to ask precisely this stupid question.
Before Harrison Barnes could collect his thoughts, another veteran sitting beside him in the postgame locker room interrupted with his own.
“No, no, no, no,” De’Aaron Fox interjected. “Absolutely not.”
“I did say it was a stupid question,” the beat writer reminded.
“It’s not a stupid question,” Fox said. “But an obvious answer.”
So there you have it.
Even for a team that has experienced as little on-court success as this Spurs group has over the past several season, the actual outcomes of these games remain inconsequential.
“We’re just trying to stack good days,” Johnson said, entertaining the same stupid question from the same intrepid beat writer. “That’s a byproduct of what we’ve been doing day to day to day. So we should feel good about that. It doesn’t mean anything, other than you can go home and say you had a good day of practice.”
So what is important about the preseason games for a team like the Spurs? That was contained in Barnes’ answer, once he was finally able to deliver it.
“I think the biggest thing is just guys getting minutes out there together,” Barnes said. “Obviously guys are getting healthy, so it’s just trying to get those reps. That’s the main focus, more than wins and losses.”
