WASHINGTON – Bismack Biyombo spent his first unofficial day with the Spurs in Orlando, where he was on hand to watch the oversized Magic bully their way to a 112-111 victory over his new team.
It didn’t take long for the veteran big man to pinpoint exactly how he might help the Spurs.
“Everybody can see,” Biyombo said. “We’ve got to figure out offensive rebounds, second-chance points, points in the paint.”
Clearly, Biyombo passed the eyesight part of the required physical before signing his 10-day contract Sunday.
Without the 6-foot-8 Biyombo, the Magic beat the Spurs 45-35 on the boards, including 12 offensive rebounds, while earning a 56-34 edge in the paint and a 20-6 advantage in the paint.
It was the type of thing that has happened often to the Spurs, especially since trading backup center Zach Collins to Chicago and losing fellow backup center Charles Bassey to the injured list with a left knee sprain.
It is a reason Biyombo was welcomed with open arms at his first Spurs shootaround leading to Monday’s game at Washington.
“Obviously we’ve got the big fella in the first group,” forward Julian Champagnie said, referring to the 7-foot-3 Victor Wembanyama. “After that, it’s up and down. I think Bismack will bring us some physicality and some leadership.”
The 32-year-old Biyombo will start his 14th NBA season the moment he steps on the court for the Spurs. In 839 career games split between seven teams, Biyombo boasts career averages of 5.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.3 blocks.
He holds a piece of the NBA record for rebounds in a playoff game, grabbing 26 for Toronto in Game 3 of the 2016 Eastern Conference Finals against Cleveland. It is a mark matched only by Dwight Howard and Hakeem Olajuwon in league history.
As a third 30-something on the Spurs’ roster, joining Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes, Biyombo believes he can also bring veteran know-how to the team for as long as he is on it.
“We were all young coming into the league,” Biyombo said. “Some of these mistakes, we all made them. It took us some time to learn. That’s the whole point of this, how can you teach some of these things and this knowledge you have acquired?”
For now, Biyombo is the one doing the learning.
He stayed late on the court after shootaround Monday in Washington, running through pick-and-roll scenarios and working up a sweat with Kenny Trevino, the team’s video coordinator.
“I think I will learn fast,” Biyombo said.
He will need to.
The countdown on Biyombo’s 10-day contract is paused during the All-Star break, leaving him eligible to play with the Spurs through the Feb. 20 game against Phoenix in Austin.
The Spurs will need to re-sign Biyombo if they play to keep him on the roster past that date.
A personal cheering section for Johnson
For reserve guard Keldon Johnson, Monday’s game in Washington was something of a homecoming. It always is.
Johnson was born about two hours south of the Capitol One Center in Chesterfield, Va. As such, Spurs games with the Wizards are always a hot ticket among Johnson’s friends and family.
He was expecting a personal cheering section number in the mid-40s on Monday.
“They roll deep,” Johnson said with a grin. “Definitely seeing friends from when I was little, people I haven’t seen in a while, it adds to the excitement.”
Despite growing up in relative proximity to D.C., Johnson said he attended exactly zero Wizards games as a kid.
“Never,” he said.
Cissoko turns up in Portland
Members of the Spurs organization were heartened to learn Sidy Cissoko had landed a two-way contract with the Portland Trail Blazers.
“He’s a young player who looks like he is on the cusp of being able to be in a rotation,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said.
A former second-round pick of the Spurs, Cissoko was traded to Sacramento as part of the deal that brought in De’Aaron Fox. The Kings immediately flipped Cissoko to Washington, which in turn waived him.
The 20-year-old forward has found a new opportunity in Portland, where he stands to find minutes with a surging Trail Blazers club.
