AUSTIN - Victor Wembanyama is expected to miss the remainder of the season due to a deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, the Spurs announced Thursday morning.
The condition was discovered when Wembanyama returned to San Antonio on Monday following his participation in the All-Star game.
The Spurs are not concerned about the 21-year-old Frenchman’s long-term health and are optimistic he will recover in time to play next season.
Wembanyama’s teammates learned about Wembanyama’s condition from team officials at a meeting before the club’s shootaround Thursday morning at Moody Coliseum, where they are set to face Phoenix on Thursday night in the first of back-to-back games in Austin,
“Tough more than anything,” point guard Chris Paul said of the team’s collective reaction to the shocking news.
“I think, for all of us, knowing how much he means our team, but more so knowing how much he means to the game and how much he loves to play.”

The 7-foot-3 center, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 NBA Draft who is a leading candidate to become the face of the league after LeBron James retires, competed in his first All-Star Game last weekend.
Wembanyama showed no signs of illness in San Francisco, where he had a busy schedule filled with appearances during All-Star Weekend.
“I’ll try to try cool down and forget a little bit about basketball for 48 hours - that’s it,” Wembanyama said after producing some impressive numbers in the two games he played in the inaugural All-Star Game mini-tournament.
Wembanyama was averaging 22.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, a league-best 3.8 blocks and 1.2 steals per game this season and was the leading candidate in the race for Defensive Player of the Year honors.

The club announced Wednesday that its franchise cornerstone was doubtful for Thursday night’s game against Phoenix at Moody Coliseum.
The Spurs (23-29) have 30 games left in the regular season.
The loss of Wembanyama comes in an already adversity-filled season for the Spurs after they lost coach Gregg Popovich following a mild stroke he suffered Nov. 2.
Popovich has been away from the team going through rehab, but the team expects him to make a full recovery. Assistant coach Mitch Johnson has been serving as the acting coach in Popovich’s absence.
“It is wild to think the circumstances and the situations that we’ve been through as a team this year, but I think you guys know when situations happen in your family and stuff like that somehow, some way it brings you closer,” Paul said. “And so I think this will do that too.”
