Spurs fans, sports world react to Wemby’s season-ending setback
Spurs center Victor Wembanyama shown Feb. 12 in Boston against the Celtics. The game appears to be his last for the season, due to a blot clot in his shoulder the Spurs announced Thursday.
The news that Spurs star Victor Wembanyama will miss the remainder of the season due to a blood clot in his right shoulder sent shock waves through the sports world, as players and fans reacted Thursday to the young star’s sudden setback.
The Spurs announced Thursday earlier in the day the French phenom is expected to miss the remaining 30 games of the season due to a deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. The condition was discovered when Wembanyama returned to San Antonio following the All-Star Game in San Francisco.
Already a sports star on a global stage, Wembanyama’s season-ending blow hit news outlets around the world, including BBC News in England and Le Monde in France.
The Spurs are optimistic the 21-year-old will recover in time to suit up for the next season.
“I’m in shock,” Miami forward Kevin Love told the Associated Press shortly after the Spurs announced Wembanyama’s condition. “Absolute shock.”
“First of all, you pray for him. You hope for the best, personally and professionally," Love said. “He means so much to the league. He’s an incredible competitor and he has a runway to be the face of the league for the next 20 years. I can’t imagine this league without him in the short term or in the long term. He’s that important.”
Nevertheless, fans and fellow players expressed concern for Wembanayama’s condition and well wishes for a speedy recovery.
“As someone who has dealt with deep vein thrombosis in the shoulder, Victor Wembanyama is very fortunate that this was discovered before becoming a life-threatening pulmonary embolism,” veteran sports writer and NBA Alumni editor Alex Kennedy posted on X.
Such cases have affected NBA players before, most notably now-retired Hall of Famer Chris Bosh, whose career was cut short after he was diagnosed with blood clots.
Yet some athletes have come back, sometimes better than ever, after dealing with blood clots.
In 2011, Serena Williams was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism — a clot on the lung — and was the dominant women’s tennis player in the world again when she returned.
“Scariest thing I ever experienced,” Williams said months after returning.
On social media, Spurs fans shared both despair and cautious optimism for Wembanyama’s health as replies and reactions flooded down screens from the Spurs announcement.
On the Spurs’ Instagram post of the news, two of the most popular comments read, “Some one fell to their knees in a Walmart in the middle of texas [sic]” and “Take my shoulder bro.”
Reactions to Wembanyama’s condition poured in to Spurs social media, some more lighthearted than others.
Meanwhile on the Spurs’ X account, the gifs and memes took a darker turn. One of the top reactions featured the video of a man shaking his fists in a profanity-laced tirade.

Wembanyama was an All-Star for the first time this season and is widely considered the brightest young star in the game.
“I’ve seen one quote that he says that nobody better call him past 9 o’clock at night because he’s either reading or he’s asleep. I think that’s super cool. I think that’s super dope,” Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James said this past weekend. “That lets you know where his mind frame is at, where he is at intellectually, and I think he’s been great, obviously, for the franchise with the Spurs. But he’s going to be great for our league for so many years to come.”
At the least the Spurs’ top X reply at press time expressed hope for Wembanyama’s return.
“We know you’ll come back stronger than ever,” the French soccer team Paris Saint-Germain posted with an @wemby tag and two hearts.
