AUSTIN – In a turn of events both unexpected and devastating for the San Antonio Spurs and their 21-year-old phenom center, Victor Wembanyama has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder.
The condition is expected to keep him out for the remainder of the season. The Spurs announced the news Thursday morning, as the team was preparing for game against Phoenix at the Moody Center in Austin.
It was only a few days ago, in the hours after his first appearance at the NBA All-Star game last weekend in San Francisco, Wembanyama was on top of the basketball world.
The Spurs’ star had just finished proving his mettle among the best of the best the league has to offer. He was ready for a quick respite, and then eager to get back to the remainder of the NBA season.
“I’ll try to cool down and forget about basketball for 48 hours,” Wembanyama said Sunday. “That’s it.”
It turns out Wembanyama’s hiatus will last substantially longer than that.
His condition was discovered when Wembanyama returned to San Antonio on Monday following his participation in the All-Star game. Players were informed of Wembanyama’s situation in a team meeting before Thursday morning shootaround in Austin.
It is yet another beleaguering blow for a Spurs team that also saw head coach Gregg Popovich take an indefinite leave of absence after suffering a stroke in early November.
“It’s tough more than anything,” said point guard Chris Paul, the only member of the organization to address the media after the morning walk-through Thursday. “I think for all of us, knowing how much he means to our team, but more so knowing how much he means to the game and how much he loves to play.”
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms within a vein. The condition itself is not considered life-threatening, but complications from it can be. A clot has the potential to loosen and travel through the bloodstream to the lungs or brain.
Spurs doctors are optimistic Wembanyama will be cleared in time to begin next season, and said they have no concerns about his long-term health.
Dr. Josh Bell is an orthopedic surgeon at TSAOG Orthopedics & Spine Treatment Center in San Antonio. Though he said he has no direct knowledge of Wembanyama’s medical chart, Bell spoke generally to the Express-News about the road a DVT patient such as the Spurs star faces.

“When we have patients who develop a blood clot, the first thing we’re looking for is an explanation for why it happened,” Bell said. “We want to investigate a good reason for why, so we can determine how to address it and reasonably predict the chances of it happening again.”
Those reasons can range from trauma stemming from a recent surgery, which is not the case with Wembanyama, to a genetic predisposition to a structural issue such as thoracic outlet syndrome.
The first step in treatment, Bell said, is typically an anti-coagulant medication – an option that would prohibit patients like Wembanyama from safely participating in contact sports while on the blood thinners.
“Patients with a blood clot are almost certainly going to be on medication for weeks or months as an initial treatment,” Bell said. “If you play in an NBA game on blood thinners and, let’s say, get hit in the head, now you’ve got a much bigger issue.”
A patient with an underlying case of thoracic outlet syndrome – a condition in which blood vessels become compressed between the clavicle and first rib – would require surgery to prevent blood clots from returning.
“The good thing is, we see this in a lot of athletes,” said Dr. Christopher Yi, a vascular surgeon at Memorial Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, Calif., who like Bell is not privy to the specifics of Wembanyama’s case. “They recover well and go on to compete at a high level again.”
Recent NBA history is rife with players suffering from maladies similar to Wembanyama’s, mostly with positive outcomes.
Chris Bosh remains the cautionary tale.
In 2016, the Miami Heat Hall of Famer was forced to retire at age 31 after a recurring bout of blood clots, one of which made its way to his lung.
Brandon Ingram underwent surgery to remove a blood clot after being diagnosed with DVT in March 2019 while playing with the Los Angles Lakers. He made a full recovery and returned to the court the next season following a trade to New Orleans. Christian Koloko, now with the Lakers, missed half his rookie season in Toronto with a blood clot issue in 2023. He, too, has fully recovered.
Detroit’s Ausar Thompson saw his rookie season cut short by a blood clot in March 2024. He returned to the floor this November.
The Spurs believe Wembanyama’s condition to be closer to Thompson’s than the career-ending situation Bosh faced.
“Vic is 21,” Paul said. “I know for me at that age, you can’t imagine not playing and missing even one game or anything like that. So I think he’ll attack recovery as well as you possibly can.”
Wembanyama displayed no sign of illness over the weekend at the All-Star festivities in San Francisco, where he tackled a busy schedule filled with appearances.
The 7-foot-3 Wembanyama was averaging 22.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, a league-best 3.8 blocks and 1.2 steals per game this season and was the top candidate to capture the Defensive Player of the Year trophy.
With his sophomore season over after 46 games, Wembanyama will not reach the required 65-game threshold to be eligible for that or any other league award, including All-NBA honors.
Wembanyama’s loss should also prove cataclysmic in the Spurs’ already long-shot chase for the postseason. They opened the post All-Star portion of their schedule Thursday at 23-29, in 12th place in the Western Conference standings and are now minus their best player for the final 30 games.
“No one is going to feel sorry for us, you know what I mean?” Paul said. “The fact that (opponents) get to go into the lane now and not see Vic in there, they’re definitely not going to be mad about it.”
