MIAMI - Forward Jeremy Sochan is inching close to returning to action, acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson indicated Friday.
Friday’s 140-112 loss to Memphis marked the fourth game in a row the Spurs have been without Sochan. They are 1-3 in that span.
Johnson said before the game that Sochan was “doing great” and “very close” to returning.
“I know I’ve said that a couple of times, but I think in the next game or two he’ll play,” Johnson said.
Sochan’s next opportunity to return will come Sunday afternoon against the Heat. After that game, the Spurs don’t play again until they face Indiana next Thursday in Paris.
Rookie continues 20-plus scoring streak
Stephon Castle, who is filling in for Sochan in the starting lineup, will enter the Miami game with a three-game streak of 20-plus points after notching 20 on Friday.
The 20-year-old Connecticut-ex has averaged 23 points during that span.
“As a group, we feel confident in the poise that he has and we trust him to go make those plays,” forward Harrison Barnes said. “They’re going to put differing matchups on him or whatever, but we him to be aggressive and we need to play offense through him at times.”
In 25 minutes Friday, Castle connected on 7 of 11 shots from the field and dished out four assists.
“Just being aggressive, trying to find my spots in transition,” Castle said.
