Sochan says his return could come within ‘days’
San Antonio Spurs forward Sidy Cissoko, from left, forward Jeremy Sochan and guard Tre Jones watch from the bench during the second half of their NBA game with the Utah Jazz at the Frost Bank Center on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024. Utah beat the Spurs 111-110.
Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan said Wednesday night his return to the court after thumb surgery could be within days.
“I’ve been wanting to play since last week, but I still got to stay patient and just follow protocol,” he said in his first session with the media since he underwent surgery three weeks ago. “But it’s going to be sooner than later. So, I think it’s going to be days instead of months, so that’s the most important thing.”
Sochan fractured his left thumb in the second quarter of the 113-104 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Nov. 4 and missed the rest of the game.
The Spurs have not announced a timeline for his return, but acting head coach Mitch Johnson said Sochan “could potentially be ahead of schedule.”
“He’s done a great job,” Johnson said before Wednesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers.
“The medical team, performance staff have done a great job,” Johnson added. “He’s been able to do some things in terms of running and staying in shape and I know we’ve heard all positive feedback.”
Given the nature of his injury, Sochan has been able to do cardio work but no five-on-five action for fear of the thumb getting hit.
“I think the process is just stay fit, have good conditioning,” he said. “I’m still able to lift so I get stronger. I laugh with my trainers that it’s kind of a little second preseason so I can get better, stronger, faster. It’s annoying (having to sit out), but it’s getting there, so that’s the most important thing.”
Sochan, a 21-year-old Baylor alumnus drafted ninth overall by the Spurs in 2022, was averaging a career-high 15.4 points per game to go along with 7.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steal in 29.3 minutes.
Johnson also offered good news on the injury front when he announced Devin Vassell (knee) would be active for Wednesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers, albeit with his minutes capped.
Vassell has played in only four games this season after missing the first nine games following offseason foot surgery. He was set to return against the Lakers after missing the past five games following an MRI that revealed a bruised bone in his left knee.
Johnson said the coaching staff hasn’t had discussions yet about how to re-adjust the rotation once Sochan ready to start again.
The Spurs started the season with a starting lineup of Chris Paul, Julian Champagnie, Harrison Barnes, Sochan and Victor Wembanyama, with Champagnie was filling in for Vassell.
After Sochan went down, rookie Stephon Castle was promoted from the bench.
“We’ve had so many moving parts, but I think we’re looking forward to have him back, Obviously what he did prior to his injury was exceptional in a lot of different ways and to continue to add to our depth.”
The coaching staff also might face a tough decision once Vassell no longer has his minutes restricted.
“More pieces is something we would welcome,” Johnson said.
