The Spurs say they have missed Jeremy Sochan’s intensity on the court, saying he brings a “nasty” edge to the game that’s much needed.

Spurs eagerly await return of Sochan and his aggressive play

Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan, center, has not played since fracturing his thumb during a Nov. 4 game against the Clippers.

In his first interview with the media since undergoing thumb surgery three weeks ago, Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan said before Wednesday’s game he could be just “days” away from returning.

“I’ve been wanting to play since last week, but I still got to stay patient and just follow protocol,” he said.

The Spurs could have used Sochan’s tough, take-no-prisoners approach against the Lakers.

Rookie Dalton Knecht scored 20 points, Anthony Davis added 19 points and 14 rebounds and LeBron James had a 16-point, 10-rebound, 11-assist triple-double as the Lakers claimed a 119-101 win to end the sluggish Spurs’ four-game winning streak.

The Lakers (11-7) winning the first period 32-23 set the tone for a game in which the Spurs never led again after going up 13-12. Both teams were in the second game of a back-to-back, but the visitors came out determined to snap their three-game skid, while the Spurs looked lethargic.

“Our physicality and just conviction, I guess, at the start of the game weren’t there and that was disappointing, especially against an opponent that is not going to give you anything,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said.

Victor Wembanyama, who led the Spurs (10-9) with 20 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks, agreed with Johnson’s assessment.

“We lacked physicality, even though I know the engagement and the will to do good were there,” Wembanyama said. “I think maybe we didn’t focus on the right things, on getting easy baskets and doing the right play. This is something collectively, and also myself, we could focus more. Because without our basis, our youth shows, and our opponent’s experience shows even more.”

But if Sochan had been active? One Spur said his aggressiveness might have been enough to spark the team.

“No matter what numbers Jeremy puts up, whether it’s in the twenties or two, he brings a certain level of physicality to the game, a certain level of nasty, as Pop (Gregg Popovich) would say,” said Julian Champagnie, who had 18 points.

“And any team needs that, and we especially need that,” Champagnie added. “There are no nights where he’s not being nasty, he’s not getting on the floor, he is not getting rebounds, he’s not playing hard. It’s personal for him, and that’s going to push everybody to do the same exact thing he’s doing. Definitely a big Energizer bunny for us.”

Fortunately for the Spurs, Sochan could soon be banging his drum again.

“It’s going to be sooner than later,” he said.

The Spurs’ next game is set for Sunday against the Kings in Sacramento, Calif. They end the two-game trip at Phoenix on Tuesday before returning to the Frost Bank Center for three games starting with an outing against Chicago on Thursday.

“It’s going to be days instead of months, so that’s the most important thing,” Sochan said of his return.

Sochan fractured his left thumb in the second quarter of a 113-104 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Nov. 4 and missed the rest of the game.

The Spurs have not announced a timeline for his return, but Johnson said Sochan “could potentially be ahead of schedule.”

“He’s done a great job,” Johnson said. “The medical team, performance staff have done a great job. He’s been able to do some things in terms of running and staying in shape, and I know we’ve heard all positive feedback.”

Given the nature of his injury, Sochan has been able to do cardio work but no five-on-five action for fear of the thumb getting hit.

“I think the process is just stay fit, have good conditioning,” he said. “I’m still able to lift so I get stronger. I laugh with my trainers that it’s kind of a little second preseason so I can get better, stronger, faster.”

Sochan, a 21-year-old Baylor alumnus drafted ninth overall by the Spurs in 2022, was averaging a career-high 15.4 points per game to go along with 7.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steal in 29.3 minutes.

“I was playing physical, I was playing aggressive,” said Sochan, describing what the Spurs lacked against the Lakers.

While Sochan watched from the bench in street clothes for the 12th straight game, the Spurs welcomed back Devin Vassell, who missed the last four games with a bruised left knee.

Vassell has played in only four games this season after also missing the first nine games following offseason foot surgery.

Johnson said the coaching staff hasn’t had discussions yet about how to re-adjust the rotation once Sochan ready to start again.

The Spurs started the season with a starting lineup of Chris Paul, Julian Champagnie, Harrison Barnes, Sochan and Victor Wembanyama, with Champagnie filling in for Vassell.

After Sochan went down, rookie Stephon Castle was promoted from the bench.

“We’ve had so many moving parts, but I think we’re looking forward to have him back,” Johnson said of Sochan. “Obviously what he did prior to his injury was exceptional in a lot of different ways.”

The coaching staff also might face a tough decision once Vassell no longer has his minutes restricted.

“More pieces is something we would welcome,” Johnson said.

Including a “nasty one” in Sochan.
