Chris Paul on Wemby’s All-Star bid: ‘Put him in’

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JANUARY 13: Victor Wembanyama #1 of the San Antonio Spurs dunks against the Los Angeles Lakers during the second half at Crypto.com Arena on January 13, 2025 in Los Angeles, California.

Victor Wembanyama’s burgeoning All-Star bid got an expected but powerful endorsement after the Spurs’ 126-102 road victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday.

“Put him in the All-Star game,” Spurs point guard Chris Paul said. “He deserves it, man.”

That Paul would stump for Wembanyama is not surprising. The two, after all, are Spurs teammates.

As a 12-time All-Star himself, however, Paul says he knows one when he sees one.

“He plays the game the right way,” Paul said. “As humble of a star as you’d ever come across. Going to be Defensive Player of the Year. He’s got an opportunity to do it for 20 years straight, you know what I mean?”

The 21-year-old Wembanyama’s bid to become the Spurs’ first All-Star starter since Kawhi Leonard in 2017 remains a bit of a longshot.

He was fourth among Western Conference frontcourt players in the last count of fan voting, trailing Denver’s Nikola Jokic, Phoenix’s Kevin Durant and the Lakers’ LeBron James.

Fan voting accounts for 50 percent of a player’s ballot score, while the players’ vote and a survey of media covering the league combines for the other half.

The top three frontcourt players in each conference are named to start the All-Star game, which this season takes place Feb. 16 in San Francisco.

The reserves are selected by coaches from each conference. Wembanyama stands a good chance there of becoming the Spurs’ first All-Star representative since Dejounte Murray in 2022.

Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson, like Paul, sees Wembanyama as a worthy candidate.

“He’s continued to progress and improved in his two years with us, and he should be happy that he’s (potentially) getting recognized for that,” Johnson said. “And I think he also understands he’s a long way from where he wants to be, and he’ll have a lot of those recognitions and opinions along the way. I don’t think it will affect him much.”

Wembanyama ranks among the league leaders in scoring (25.1 points per game) and rebounding (10.7 per game), while leading the NBA in blocks with 3.9 per outing.

Paul said he has become even more enamored with Wembanyama since joining the Spurs last summer.

“He’s just a unbelievable player,” Paul said. “But I say this every time I talk about him: I wish everybody got to know him on a personal basis. And if you knew him like that, you’d be a bigger fan of his.”

Spurs take it easy with Sochan

Forward Jeremy Sochan was again sidelined with a sore lower back in Los Angeles, the third game he has missed in the past five with that injury.

While Johnson said Sochan’s malady was “getting better,” the Spurs will continue to proceed with caution when it comes to his health.

“It’s something we don’t want to rush,” Johnson said. “We don’t want to deal with it where he is in one game, out one game, things like that. We want him to be all the way right.”

Sochan’s status will likely be a game-day decision as the Spurs face Memphis on Wednesday.

Castle gets it going

The narrative of Stephon Castle perhaps hitting a rookie wall was itself smashed to bits in L.A.

Starting in place of Sochan, Castle highlighted the Spurs’ romp over the Lakers with 23 points, including a 10 of 16 showing from the field.

He was particularly impressive in the third quarter, totaling 14 of his points in the frame to help the Spurs recover from a 62-53 halftime deficit.

“I felt I just had it going,” said Castle, the No. 4 selection in last June’s draft. “My teammates were finding me, telling me to keep being aggressive. I was really just trying to touch paint, try and draw two, and if nobody came over, I was just being aggressive.”

The outing was Castle’s 22nd of the season to score in double digits, and his fifth with 20 or more points. It was his first double-digit game since also going for 23 in a Nov. 26 victory at Utah.
