Victor Wembanyama’s Spurs teammates say they had no doubt he would be named an All-Star starter when they were announced Monday afternoon.
Wembanyama wasn’t as confident.
“I wasn’t sure my name was going to be up there," Wembanyama said.
Oh, Wemby of little faith.
The 22-year-old center heard his name called, becoming a Western Conference All-Star starter for the first time in his career. He was the first Spurs player to achieve that designation since Kawhi Leonard in 2017.
Wembanyama was the 10th out of 10 starters announced on NBC’s nationally televised announcement show, which came a few hours before the Spurs tipped off against the Utah Jazz on Monday. The long wait was reminiscent of last year, when he was the final All-Star reserve player announced.
“It’s good because it made my adrenaline spike before the game," Wembanyama joked.

Wembanyama celebrated his selection as an All-Star starter at the expense of the Jazz.
He finished Monday with 33 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and two rebounds in 27 minutes in a 123-110 Spurs victory. He also made a season-high seven 3-pointers on 12 attempts.
Wembanyama said the honor he received Monday came with a side of national pride.
“I was really happy to learn I was the first French guy to get that,” Wembanyama said.
Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox – a one-time All-Star himself — said he wasn’t surprised to hear Wembanyama’s name called Monday.
“That’s what we’ve come to expect," Fox said. "As long as he stays healthy, he’s going to be one of the best players in this league. That’s just another stepping stone.”
Slowly but surely, Wembanyama is forced to agree. He hopes there are more All-Star starts where that came from.
“It’s great,” Wembanyama said. “It’s just another step.”
