One by one, the names of the NBA All-Star reserves were announced Thursday in a made-for-TV spectacle on TNT.
Thirteen came and went, with nary a mention of a certain 7-foot-3 Frenchman from San Antonio.
If Victor Wembanyama’s teammates were worried that somehow their superhuman centerpiece would be snubbed, they didn’t let it show.
“I had no worries,” forward Keldon Johnson said.
When TNT analyst Kenny Smith at last flipped the final card with Wembanyama’s name on it, there was not exactly a sigh of relief in San Antonio.
Only a nod of recognition.
“It’s no surprise,” Johnson said. “He put in the work.”
Voted to the player pool for the Feb. 16 game in San Francisco by a ballot of Western Conference coaches, Wembanyama became the Spurs’ first All-Star representative since Dejounte Murray was selected as an injury replacement in 2022.
He is the first Spur voted into the game outright since LaMarcus Aldridge in 2019.
At age 21 and 26 days, Wembanyama is the youngest All-Star in Spurs history. Tim Duncan was the previous holder of that distinction, making his first All-Star game as a rookie in 1998 at 21 years and 10 months.
“It is just a testament to his first year and a half in this league and the work he put in prior to that, trusting the process in trying to get incrementally better and not skipping steps,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said of Wembanyama, the NBA’s No. 1 overall draft pick in 2023. “That allows the talent and unique skill set to shine through.”
The Spurs have placed at least one player on the All-Star roster for 42 of the 48 games held since the NBA-ABA merger in 1976, equaling the Los Angeles Lakers for most of any franchise in that span.
Wembanyama narrowly missed becoming a Western Conference starter, finishing fourth among Western Conference frontcourt players in a vote of fans, media and NBA players behind Denver’s Nikola Jokic, the Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James and Phoenix’s Kevin Durant. Golden State’s Stephen Curry and Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous Alexander are the starting guards in the West.
Wembanyama was not available at shootaround Friday morning to discuss his first career All-Star selection, but was expected to talk after the Spurs’ home game that night against Milwaukee.
As the only other player on the Spurs’ roster with All-Star experience on his resume, point guard Chris Paul said he was excited for his younger teammate.
A 12-time All-Star, Paul has appeared in the game as both a starter and a reserve.
“I’ve had the opportunity to be voted in by the coaches and by the fans,” Paul said. “Of course it’s great to be voted in by the fans. If Vic gets voted in by the coaches, that’s an honor to be voted in by your peers.”
Wembanyama made the West squad in his second season while averaging 24.4 points, 10.8 rebounds and league-best 3.9 blocks per game.
He is already the only player in NBA annals to record multiple seasons with at least 150 blocks, 100 assists and 100 3-pointers. In addition, Wembanyama is the only player in league history to log 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 200 3-pointers in his first 100 career games.
Earlier in the week, Wembanyama was also named to the roster for the Rising Stars challenge. Because of his inclusion to the full-fledged All-Star squad, Wembanyama is not expected to compete in Rising Stars event in San Francisco.
“I think to just be acknowledged in that way is a special thing,” forward Harrison Barnes said of Wembanyama’s All-Star bid. “There’s so much expectation on him, especially since his rookie year. For him to be able to have that All-Star nod is really great.”
The rest of the West reserve roster consists of Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards, the Los Angeles Lakers’ Anthony Davis, the Los Angeles Clippers’ James Harden, Memphis’ Jaren Jackson Jr., Houston’s Alperen Sengun and Oklahoma City’s Jalen Williams.
The Eastern Conference roster is comprised of starters Giannis Antetokoumpo of Milwaukee, Boston’s Jayson Tatum, Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell, and the New York Knicks’ Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns, as well as reserves Jaylen Brown of Boston, Indiana’s Pascal Siakam, Cleveland’s Darius Garland and Evan Mobley, Detroit’s Cade Cunningham, Milwaukee’s Damian Lillard and Miami’s Tyler Herro.
The Spurs are set to welcome three of those East All-Stars to the Frost Bank Center on consecutive nights this weekend – Antetokounmpo and Lillard of the Bucks on Friday and Herro and the Heat on Saturday.
Wembanyama is one of six first-time All-Stars selected this season, joining Sengun, Williams, Cunningham, Mobley and Herro.
For Keldon Johnson, who played college ball at Kentucky with Herro, Thursday’s All-Star announcements came with a double dose of pride. He was thrilled for Wembanyama and Herro alike.
“He’s put in his time,” Johnson said of Herro. “He’s one of the hardest workers I know and I’m glad to be a part of his journey.”
For Johnson and the rest of the Spurs’ roster, a front-row seat to the past season and a half of the Wemby Show has been a privilege as well.
This week might have marked the first All-Star selection for Wembanyama, though Johnson has a prediction about that.
“It’s the first of many, many more to come,” Johnson said.
