LOS ANGELES – Even with the stress of dealing with his family’s evacuation of their Los Angeles home to stay clear of the wildfires devastating the area, Spurs point guard Chris Paul hasn’t stopped looking out for his teammates.
“These past couple days he’s just been telling us, if we need anything, text him,” forward Julian Champagnie said. “He’s the king of LA.”
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JANUARY 06: Chris Paul #3 of the San Antonio Spurs celebrates a three pointer against the Chicago Bulls during the second half at the United Center on January 06, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois.
Champagnie said such unselfish behavior is typical of the 39-year-old future Hall of Famer the Spurs affectionally call “Unc.” But during this trying time, the Spurs are doing their best to make things easier on him.
“Just trying to keep him smiling, keep his spirits up, talk to him when we can,” Champagnie said. “Keep his mind of it.”
When Paul’s teammates learned of his family’s situation, the Spurs set out to give an assist to their top playmaker. They have been rallying around him with primarily emotional support.
“I feel like that’s all we can do, be there for him,” forward Keldon Johnson said. “Whatever he needs, whatever time he needs, whatever we can do to make everything smoother and better for him.”
Through a Spurs spokesman, Paul declined to talk to the media until he learns for certain all is OK with his family and his home in what has been a fluid situation. He participated in both of the Spurs’ practices this past weekend at Crypto.com Arena and also at shootaround at the building Monday morning in preparation for that night’s game against the Lakers.
“It’s definitely scary, everything that is going on,” Paul told reporters last Wednesday night after a game in Milwaukee. “I’m sending so much love and prayers to some of my closest friends and family who have lost everything.”
When the media was ushered into the walkthrough on Monday, Paul was sitting in a frontcourt seat chatting with Spurs’ Hall of Famer Tony Parker, who is with the team through their trip to Paris later this month.
“There ain’t much we can do concerning the fire but just keep him in good spirits and try to keep his mind of it and just be together as a team,” Champagnie said. “Just be a brotherhood. Get him dunking out there and stuff, try to get his mind off it.”
A North Carolina native, Paul decided to plant roots in L.A. while playing for the Los Angeles Clippers from 2011-2017.
His wife, Jada Paul, took to social media late last week to share her thoughts on the tragedy that so far has killed 24 people and destroyed more than 12,000 structures.
“Yes, I’m in LA and I’m safe, but I’m also in LA and I’m sad,” she wrote on Instagram.

The Associated Press reported that a preliminary estimate by AccuWeather put the damage and economic losses so far between $135 billion and $150 billion, meaning it is on track to become the costliest wildfires in the nation’s history.
As of Monday, about 150,000 people in Los Angeles County remained under evacuation orders, with more than 700 residents taking refuge in nine shelters. Thousands have been displaced, including the Paul family.
Other NBA players are going through similar issues, including the Los Angeles Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard and Nicolas Batum. Both players had family members evacuated. Lakers coach JJ Redick’s home burned to the ground in the wildfire that destroyed Pacific Palisades.
Crews from California and nine other states, including Texas, are part of the ongoing response that includes nearly 1,400 fire engines, 84 aircraft and more than 14,000 personnel, including newly arrived firefighters from Mexico, according to the Associated Press.
The Lakers announced they are dedicating Monday’s game to Los Angeles’ first responders in a bid to “honor the strength of the community as recovery efforts being for those impacted by the local wildfires.”
The Lakers also announced they will host a donation drive at their upcoming games to support relief efforts.
For the Spurs, Monday’s game represents a welcome return to normalcy. They haven’t played since last Wednesday night when a loss to the Buck extended their losing streak to three games. The NBA postponed the Spurs-Lakers game on Saturday night for fear the contest would divert needed resources from the firefighting efforts.
“This was like a mini-vacation that nobody wanted,” Champagnie said. “It’s a nice place, but obviously things are going on, so it’s rough. It will be fun trying to get back into that rhythm tonight.”
The ever-vocal Paul undoubtedly will be at the center of that effort.
“He’s been excellent for us,” acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “I wish he had been here for the last 20 years. His tutelage has been strong, and it has been suffocating in the best way as you see him coaching and on the guys and leading and directing. We are a program that needed it.”
Said Champagnie, “He’s a vocal guy. He’s always up and always telling us how he thinks things should be done, which is good when you have a bunch of young guys. He’s been really good with us.”
Even in the most stressful of times for Paul personally.
